An article carried in this newspaper last week, based on a news release from the State Welfare Department in Raleigh, stated that the program would probably be started in March. The ? commissioners in dis cussing the suggested release date said they would like to complete the surplus food pro gram before embarking on the stamp program. They said it would cost the county a con siderable sum of money to cut off the commodity program be fore its expiration in April. The commissioners passed a resolution authorizing the clerk and board chairman to sign a contract with Consolidated Mapping and Appraisal Com pany to revalue property in Warren County over the next two years. The board sche duled a meeting to be held last night (Wednesday) to discuss the revaluation program with a representative of the ipr.ra.isal company. The board authorized the ex penditure of $225 for the pur chase of a pellet gun from the Town of Norlina. The gun is to be used by Claude J. Fleming, Dog Warden. In addition to the resolution concerning the ap praisal of property and the purchase of the pellet gun all other matters transacted by the board were of a routine nature. The board held an unusually long session, adjourning after 5 o'clock, and discussed both the Food Stamp Program for the county and ambulance service. They took no action on the am bulance service, stating that while they realized the gravity of the situation, that no money was put in the budget for such service, and that only a small about was left in the conting- j ency fund for any purpose. They put in a telephone call to Ral- j eight, but received no usable I suggestions. Without any money ! in the budget and with no hope of borrowing, Chairman Capps j asked what could they do. An- J nouncement that the Warren ' County Kural Fire Department | would discontinue its ambulance ' service, was greeted with some dismay and expression of the j hope that the Warren Rescue I i Squad could fill the breach until j the 1968-69 budget is prepar- i I ed. The commissioners not only J I found that they had no money j I available for Ambulance Ser- ; vice, but little on hand for the enlargement of the Welfare De- > i partment. Welfare Director 1 Julian Farrar and Welfare I Board Member Bill Benton of i Littleton appeared before the board to suggest additions to j the present Welfare Depart- i ment. Farrar, who submitted a i drawing of the proposed addi tion, told the commission- j ers that the State Welfare De partment had indicated to him i that they wanted the stamp pro- | gram carried on at the same ' place that other welfare acti vities are carried on in order that he might give the program close supervision. Farrar said that the addition could be paid for over the years in rent pay ments made by the State and Federal Welfare Departments. The commissioners sug gested that Farrar get in touch with William W. Taylor in Ral eigh to ascertain if he could rent office space in the Taylor Building for two months prior to the making out of the new budget. Farrar is to report his findings at a later meeting. Warren County Jail To Be Renovated, Jury_Says Work on renovating the coun ty jail is expected to start within the next month, the War ren County Grand Jury said in its report to Judge Henry Mc Kinnon on Wednesday morning. The jury said that repairs to the jail recommended in the January, 1967, report has not been made, but it is under stood that money has been ap propriated and a bid accepted. The committee visiting the jail reported the jail clean, neat and well kept. The grounds are clean and neat and the en tire premises in good order, with the exception of exterior paint which is peeling. The committee, the report said, has been assured by the Sheriff that the exterior will be painted within the next month. There are four inmates. Board Has No Solution To Problem The Warren County Rural Volunteer Fire Department has discontinued its ambulance ser vice. The board of directors of the fire department, notified the board of county commissioners Tuesday that it would dis continue its service at once. All Funeral Directors of the county discontinued ambulance service on Dec. 31. Only the ambulances of the Warren County Rescue Squad remains to give the county ambulance service. The directors said that with the funeral homes discontinuing service that the additional bur den placed on the Fire Depart ment would be greater than the company could bear. A short age of personnel, they said, made it imperative that the de partment go out of the ambu lance business. It would be impossible, the di rectors said, for any member or members to donate the time needed for voluntary service. It could mean, he pointed out that on occasions it might re quire employee to be awa from his business two or three days a week. The directors said that it was with extreme regret, in the face of evident need, that the Fire Department is forced to relinquish its ambulance ser vice. The County Commissioners wrestled with the problem at their meeting here Tuesday but failed to come up with any solu tion, due to a shortage of funds, Amos Capps, board chairman, said that the county has no funds on hand for ambulance service and knows no place where it can obtain any funds. Certification Of Indigents To End After Two Weeks Certification of indigent citil zens for surplus commodi ties will be continued for only two more weeks, Julian Farrar, Warren County Welfare Direc tor, announced Monday.
