Mrs. Davis Relates Club Experiences By MRS. ROBERT B. DAVIS As a club member of the Coley Spring Extension Home makers Club (or 30 years, I have enJoyed every one. The club was organized under Mrs. Annie B. Branch, Home Economics Agent, March 12, 1940. Our first meeting was held In the home of Mrs. Albert B. Davis. The officers elected were, Mrs. William Hawkins, president and I, Mrs. Robert B. Davis, secretary. I teas also committee chairman on Community Service, project leader in Housing and House Furnishings and 4-H club leader. I tried to live up to our motto, "Lifting as we Climb." I attended the first state council meeting held In Raleigh at the First Baptist Church and the first Farmers Conference held at State Teachers College, Fayetteville. I learned to sew because it was much to accomplish in being a real homemaker. I worked to achieve better living In my community as well as ray home. I learned to prepare the foods one should eat for the best of health; to grow a garden with the required number of vegetables; to preserve and store food and later to freeze foods in our home freezer. My husband and I were share farmers, living with our father for several years. Then we bought our farm from him and when our son came home from the army, we built a home. My husband and son cut all the timber they needed from the farm. The stones used to underpin the house were also from th» fans. We worked together wit* olans for our new home. The cost was cut by my husband and son helping the contractors and doing much of the work. The farm agent, Mr. C. S. Wynn, gave suggestions on a site for the house and brought Mr. John Harris the specialist on beaut if lcation from Raleigh to see us. He told how to beautify the lawn and set the shrubs around the house. Mr. R. E. Jones, from A. 4 T. State University cam* and took pictures of our house, after It was completed. Our new home included running water and bath. Our agents said we were some ot the first farmers to install running water In the county. Mrs. Peggy Drew, Home Economics Agent, came to the county. I learned more about club work and had more to share with others. In workshops, I learned to refinish old picture frames and furniture. Mrs. Bertha B. Forte Is the Home Economics Extension Agent now. I am still on the go as a club worker. I was elected to go on a U. S. Study Tour In 1966. This was the most educational trip I had ever made. I had the honor to visit the White House, Agricultural Building, Pan American Building, President Kennedy's grave and other places while in Washington, D. C. In New York, I visited the U. N. and went to meetings In every corner of the building. I spent time in the General Assembly where all the Nations come together, visited Lincoln Center, Empire Building, Rockfellow Center, China Town and toured other places of Interest in New York. 1 attended the U. S. Alumni Day, October 24,1969, that was held at the Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh. I also participated In two workships held in Raleigh for project chairmen. The first one in the Baptist Student Union Building and the second workshop in the Mllner Memorial Presbyterian Church. This Is my 30th year of club work and I can't tell all the things I have done, nor the places I've been, or the interesting workshops participated In during this time. This club work has made me a better wife, mother, and friend In my community and county. By being a dob member, it made me a bettor church worker. The offices I hold today are: President of the Coley Spring Extension Homemakers dub, 2nd vice president of Coanty Council, 2nd« iHrf CMfl
