In one game, Greene totaled 285 yards rushing on 12 carries. Joe is now starring at Chowan where he has rushed for over 1,000 yards this season and ranks fourth in scoring, fifth in rushing, and sixth in total offense — nationally! Greene, a 6-1,191-pounder, had a personal best of 212 yards and two TD's in a 27-7 win over LeesMcRae. He added 138 yards rushing and one touchdown against Nassau (N.Y.,) last Saturday to maintain his lofty national ranking. Of course Greene was a first team All-East pick and led the Eagles to a 9-3 record and a 42-6 playoff win over Tarboro last year. But who would have believed that not one, but two new superstars would come along to replace Greene. Derrick Davenport and Alvin Williams have given Coach Bill Frazier's Eagles a one-two punch that may never be duplicated. Davenport, a 169pound sophomore; and Williams, a 170-pound senior, have combined for more than 2,000 yards rushing this season. Davenport has over 1,100 yards while Williams has 977, entering Friday night's regular season finale against Northwest Halifax. Davenport was named as The News & Observer's "Player of the Week" for his amazing 346 yard performance against East Northampton last Friday night. Derrick amassed that total in just 17 carries, and even more spectacularly, scored six touchdowns along the way! While Davenport was setting his records, Williams was running for 135 yards in 15 carries, and scoring one touchdown. The two I-backs alternate plays, and the totals by both are truly astounding. Williams should easily crack the i,000-yard mark Friday night to give the Eagles a pair of 1,000yard rushers. With this "Dynamic Duo" carrying the pigskin Warren County has a 7-2 record and will be favored to make it 8-2 this week. The Eagles will be the Roanoke River 3-A Conference's no. 2 team in the playoffs next week, and will meet either Washington,, Bertie, or Tarboro in the opening round. COOPER ON ALL-AMERICA LIST:Warren County's defending state championship basketball team opened pre-season practice Monday. Jerome Cooper, the Eagles' 6-7 All-East center, was recently named to Street & Smith's All-America honorable mention list. Last season, Jerome averaged 14.2 ppg. and 18.1 rpg. in helping WC to a 25-7 record and the title. In addition to the All-East first team, Cooper was named honorable mention on the All-State squad. Among the early visitors to the WC campus were the coaches from the University of South Carolina. Also named to the Street & Smith team were guard Keith Gatlin of Grimesland, D. H. Conley and center Johnnie Thompson of Lawrenceville, Va. Brunswick. Both were named on the high honorable mention list. East Northampton's 6-2 center, Angela Daye, was picked on the girls' All-America fifth team, putting her in the top 25 players in the country. The lists are based primarily on the players' performances at the national summer camps, with little or no weight being placed on how the player has done throughout his (or her) career. HENDERSON TO PREP SCHOOL?: Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski was quoted in the ACC Handbook as saying he considered sending David Henderson to prep school this year! Sending David to prep school is akin to putting on a blindfold when Bo Derek walks in the room. It's only speculation, but a good bet says Duke would have lost Henderson if they had tried to ship him off to a prep school this year. It would have been a total waste of his time. REMEMBER JIM COOK? No, you don't remember WRAL (101.5 FM) Radio's morning disc jockey. Well, last Spring Cook got in a spat with Durham Bulls' general manager Ricky May. It seems that Cook wanted to sing the National Anthem at a Bulls' game and woke May up every morning to ask for the opportunity. Finally, after being rudely awakened several times, May told Cook to bug off. But Cook's perserverance paid off, as he was finally given the chance to perform. Soon after that, Cook was off the airwaves at WRAL. Many listeners wondered if Jim's antics hadn't been responsible to his heave-ho. Well, I'm happy to report that the entire thing was a "set-up". According to May, the whole series of disturbing phone calls was taped a week in advance as a gimmick. The gimmick was clever and left listeners red-faced. But nevertheless, Cook was dismissed by WRAL, for a still undetermined (publicly) reason. nesdav, November 3,1982— Page 10 Big Games On Tap This Weekend A big week of college football is on tap this Saturday, topped by the Georgia-Florida, Notre DamePitt, and UCLA-Washington games. Another regional biggie, UNC at Clemson is slated for Saturday afternoon. As fearless Forecaster has been saying all along, Washington "just wasn't that good, they played a pattycake schedule." Stanford (5-3) knocked the Huskies from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 43-31 win. The real surprise came in Chapel Hill, where Maryland ran all over Carolina in a 31-24 victory, ending any hopes by the Tar Heels to land a major bowl berth. "1 still can't believe that one," muttered Fearless. Fearless was on hand down in Athens, Ga., to see second-ranked Georgia polish off Memphis State, 34-3. Herschel Walker, battling Stanford's John El way for the Heisman Trophy, rushed for 219 yards on 30 carries, and now stands just 1,381 yards shy of Tony Dorsett's all-time NCAA rushing mark of 6,082. Barring injury, Walker has 14 more regular season games remaining to eclipse that mark. Fearless was not impressed with the Dawgs however, and has a surprise pick for this week. WAKE FOREST AT DUKE: Flash! Duke has arisen from the grave and that's bad news for the preachers. Can the Deacons preside over another Duke funeral this Saturday? Fearless says Wake Forest can spare the Devils the prayers. "They The Eagles' "Brick Wall" defense rises to the occasion Friday night, stopping this East Northampton back for no gain. The Eagles won the conference match by a 50-16 margin and will play their final regular season game here Friday night. (Staff Photo) Davenport Scores Six TDs In 50-16 Warren Victory Derrick Davenport rushed for 346 yards and scored six touchdowns to lead Warren County to a 50-16 romp over East Northampton last Friday night, assuring the Eagles of a playoff berth. The 169-pound sophomore only carried the ball 17 times in the conference game, but six of those resulted in scores. Davenport tallied on runs of 62,12,14, 60, 49 and 46 yards — playing just half of the game! The 346 yards breaks the school record held by former All-East back Joe Greene. Greene had 285 yards on 12 carries in a game last season. The six touchdowns are a school and conference record, and equal a mark set by Jay House of John Graham in 1966. House scored six TD's and totaled 41 points (five PAT runs) in his final game that year. The tremendous effort by Davenport put him over the 1,100-yard mark this season, but another Eagle back, Alvin Williams, also had a banner night. Williams alternates at the I-back slot for WC, and had 135 yards in 15 carries. He now has 977 yards for the year and should surpass the magic 1,000-yard mark Friday night against Northwest Halifax. While the Eagles' homecoming game appears to have been a rout, it wasn't until the second half that Warren Henderson's Talents To Be Showcased David Henderson's bMtaftdl talents, well known to local residents, will be put on display for others during three blue-white gmm*a to be tills mnwHi by the Duke University tmmm Henderson, who led Warren Oomty High School's Eagles to the state 3-A championship last spring, is a member of the freshman class at Duke. He will perform at 8:45 p. m. on Nov. 6 at Cameron Indoor Stadium on the Duke campus; on November 9 at 8 p. m. at Grimsley High School in Greensboro and on November i 11 at 7:30 p. m. at Charlotte's Meyers Park High School. Hie Blue Devils will play an exhibition game on November 17 against the French national team in Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7:30 p. m. Admission is $2 far adults and $1 for children. County took control. East Northampton was no patsy and led 16-14 late in the first half. But Davenport erupted for a 62-yarder and added a 12-yard sprint to put the Eagles on top for good. Most of Davenport's TD's came on sweeps, as the Ram defenders couldn't match his blazing speed. How good was his effort? Coach Bill Frazier, a veteran of more than 20 seasons, called Davenport's game, "The best by a back I've ever seen in a game. It's hard to believe there could be a better game than Joe Greene had last year (285 yards on 12 rushes,) but this one was the best." While Davenport was piling up a half-dozen scores, Williams added another touchdown on a four-yard run in the second half. The extra points came on passes from quarterback Kenneth Yancey to Gerald Green (twice), and one from Richard Frazier to Green. Kicker Lawrence Harrison added two PAT's to account for the scoring. The win improves the Eagles' record to 7-2, and seals the conference's no. 2 playoff spot in the state playoffs which begin Nov. 12. West Northampton won the conference title with a 39-6 rout of Weldon and will enter the Division I playoffs. Warren County is the nmnerup and will enter the Division n playoffs as the league's no. 2 team. The opponent will again come from the Northeastern S-A, and will be either Washington, Bertie County, or Tarboro, depending on this week's games. Warren County win be the home team in the opening round, but the site of the game has yet to be determined. The Eagles will dose out their regular season Friday night with a home game against Northwest Halifax, the team WC beat for the conference title last season. Kickoff is 8 p. m. At halftime of Friday night's game, senior Monique Hawkins was crowned as Warren County High's first homecoming queen. Derrick Davenport (33) avoids a would-be tackier and sets tail for one of the six touchdowns he scored Friday night His yardage total for the night was the highest in school history. (Staff Photo) Norlina Outpoints Gaston By 16-14 Randy Jordan ran for two touchdowns and quarterback Alan Ellington scored the winning two-point conversion as Norlina held off Gaston, 16-14, in a middle school game last Wednesday afternoon. Gaston scored first on a 60-yard run and led S-0 after the first quarter. Norlina tied the score in the second period on Jordan's first run, a 65-yard scamper. Ellington hit Phillip Terry for the two-point PAT pass. Gaston tallied on a 70yard run in the third quarter, but again, the Lakers failed on the PAT. Jordan's second touchdown, a 13-yard sprint, set the stage for Ellington's winning PAT ran. For the Blue Waves, Jordan had 85 yards rushing, while Willie Burchette added 70 on the ground. Ellington was 5-of-7 passing (or 100 yards, and Dan West led the tacklers with six stops. Norlina had the edge in first downs, 10-0, while the Lakers had a slight edge in total yardage, 244-233. Coach Billy Fuller praised the play of West, Burchette, Ellington, Terry, and William Clark. Fuller said, "We (Continued on page 11) might say one for themselves," says Fearless. Duke 27, Wake Forest 14. STATE AT PENN STATE: Speaking of bad new*. Just When State wasn't afraid to go bade on the field, a bunch of Nittany Lions with big Jaws comes along to eat up the Wolfpack. With Joe Mcintosh, State is an 18-point underdog; without him, they're still an 18-point underdog. Penn State 31, State IS. MIAMI AT MARYLAND:After that emotional win over UNC, the Terrapins have bowl fever. If Miami is to have any chance it will be in catching Maryland flat after last week. But Fearless says the Terps are flying high and will blow the Hurricanes back to south Florida. Maryland 24, Miami 10. VIRGINIA AT GEORGIA TECH: Two wins for the Cavaliers in a row, and Tech lost to Duke last week. Will Virginia win again? "Don't be ridiculous," says Fearless. Georgia Tech 23, Virginia 17. CAROLINA AT CLEMSON: We'll find out what the Tar Heels are made of—concrete or tar? Before UNC's untimely loss to Maryland, Fearless rated Clemson as a slight favorite in this one, now he Mil* them a slim favorite. Slight or slim, this one's for the Gator Bowl. Clemson 21, Carolina 17. THE TOP GAMES GEORGIA VS. FLORIDA (at Jacksonville:) Georgia has won 30 of their last 32 games and has 'you know who' running the ball nearly every down. The last two years they've beaten Florida by identical 26-21 scores in this biggie. How can Fearless pick an up-and down Gator team to win this one? "Simple," says Fearless, "Georgia is hurting without All-American tackle Jimmy Payne (who will not play.) He's awesome, just like Lawrence Taylor, but without him, the Dogs are in trouble." Florida 20, Georgia 17. NOTRE DAME AT PITT: Like Georgia, Pitt hasn't been playing up to par the last couple of weeks. This could spell trouble for the guys in blue and gold. Pitt has played a rinky dink schedule and is not prepared for a decent team like the Irish. But this is Notre Dame's third straight road game, and Fearless thinks the Irish may have a little Jet lag. Pitt 24, Notre Dame 16. UCLA AT WASHINGTON: Welcome to reality Washington. After that loss at Stanford, the Huskies may not finish any higher than third in their conference. A loss to UCLA would almost assure that. From first in the nation to third in their conference—what a drop! But that's the one Fearless predicts. In big upset no. 2 this week. Fearless picks UCLA 21, Washington 19. OTHER GAMES: Alabama over LSU, Air Force over Army, Boston College over Massachusetts, Syracuse-Navy are even, West Virginia over Temple (an upset possibility,) Florida State over South Carolina, Tennessee over Memphis State, and Michigan over Illinois. Also, Iowa State-Kansas (even), Michigan State over Northwestern, Missouri over Colorado, Nebraska over Oklahoma State, Ohio State oyer Minnesota, Iowa over Purdue (an upset?), Wisconsin over Indiana, Arkansas over Baylor, Oklahoma over Kansas State, SMU over Rice, Texas over Houston (even), New Mexico over UTEP, TCU over Texas Tech (even,) and Arizona State over Oregon State. And, ECU over Texas-Arlington, BYU over Wyoming, Washington State-Oregon (even), Southern California over California, Stanford over Arizona, and Utah-Utah State (a toss-up). HIGH SCHOOL GAME NORTHWEST AT WARREN COUNTY: Playoff game in sight, the Eagles put the lights out for the Vikings. It's 8-2 and on to the playoffs. Warren County 29, Northwest 6.
