He then became a Staff Sergeant E7, the grade he holds today. During all his service with the National Guard, Sgt. Arnold has maintained 100 per cent attend ance, never missing a drill nor any trip or duty required by the Guard. He has been present for every roll call—a most unusual record for even the most dedicated Guards man. His activity in the Guard doesn’t keep him from filling an important role in the civic and church life of his community. A member of Zebulon Baptist Church and Sun day School, he has served as Senior and Junior Deacon, chairman of the Junior Board for two years, Sunday School teacher for eight years, member of the Building and Property Committee for 15 years, Associate Superintendent of the Young Adult Department for two years, church custodian for a year, is now secretary of the Sunday School and one of two male solo ists featured with the Baptist ! choir. He finds time for work with the Lions Club, which he serves as first vice president. Previously he has been secretary, second vice president, and chairman of the' Blind Sight Committee. I The American Legion had a profitable year when he was com mander, and for several years he [ served the veterans’ organization j as adjutant. He is active in the Wakelon ! School Boosters’ Club, and for a j year worked as secretary-treasur- ' er of this group. The energetic Guardsman is { j happily married to the former I j Dare Clark. They were wed March ^ 1 14, 1952, less than two months be- i I fore the new groom volunteered ' J for World War II. The Arnolds j have two beautiful daughters: Sue, j ! 15; and Nancy, 8. 1 j “Nobody,” says Sgt. Arnold, “has i j more work to do than an Adminis- | trative-Supply Technician. It’s the ! I most diversified work available, so | j an AST must be able to do every- i j thing in a unit a little. ! “To keep even with the work,” | he continued, “urgent matters have i | to be completed first. Then con- j I centrate on the work that re-1 I mains.” ' ! Sgt. Arnold devotes the same. careful attention to his administra- , tive work that he did to vehicles . and other equipment when he was caretaker. Only one morning re- ! ! port has required an initialed cor- i | rection in all his years at work, and j I that was for a misnumbered page.I | For the past four years all Battery I IA payrolls have been perfectly1 j prepared—a fete equivalent to a ! I ballplayer batting 1.000 and hit-I i ting 70 homeruns in a season. With men of Sgt. Arnold’s cali | ber playing such important parts j in church, school, and civic life, • it is clear why the National Guard j j has its roots sunk deep in Ameri- | I can communities. - | Civil Defense to Be PTA Program Topic (Continued from Page 1) dent, and Hardin Hinton, project | chairman, wish to thank local j j merchants for the prizes donated 1 j to the Halloween Carnival. They ! also appreciate the cakes, candy.! and many hours of their time giv j en by various parents and teachers, i The excellent support given the . Carnival by the students was very . gratifying. I According to Mrs. Davis, the : P.T.A. made about $275 on the Halloween Carnival; however, the exact amount of the profit will not be known until all the bills have ; been paid. j There will be an executive i : meeting at 7:15 Monday night. All P.T.A. officers and committee chairmen are urged to attend.
