News of Wendell E. R. Sykes underwent surgery Friday at Wake Memorial Hospital. Bobby Yeargin of Newport News, Va., spent the weekend with his mother, Mrs. Ludie Year gin. Mrs. C. I. Johnson returned to her home in Wendell Saturday af ter three weeks in Wendell-Zebu lon Hospital. She suffered a stroke and remains about the same. Otha “Moon” Mullen is a pa tient at Wendell-Zebulon Hospital suffering from a respiratory at tack. i Philip R. Whitley continues ill at Wake Memorial Hospital with pleurisy and complications. Mrs. Albert Wells of Rich Square had a gall bladder opera tion at Ahoskie Hospital Friday. Her mother, Mrs. Kelly Hunter, was with her. Elizabeth Wells, RN, and sister-in-law of Raleigh is nursing her. Mrs. J. A. Wells is staying with her grandchildren while Mrs. Wells in the hospital. Mrs. Hubert Ledford of Raleigh spent Friday with Mrs. Luther Ledford. Mr. Motley underwent sur gery in Greensboro last week. Wingate Underhill returned to his home in Greensboro after sur gery in a Greensboro hospital. He is a former Wendell boy and is a brother of Mrs. E. R. Sykes and H. W. Underhill. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Liles of Zeb ulon and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Liles are vacationing this week in Washington, D. C. Mrs. W. W. Strickland of Zebu Ion is a patient in Mary Elizabeth Hospital. Mr. Strickland has been at the home of his son, Willis Strickland, in Raleigh. Nan Phipps of Meredith College is spending Thanksgiving with Mary Todd Satterfield of ACC at her home in Windell. Mrs. G. H. Scarborough is visit ing her daughter, Helen, and fam ily in New Orleans, La. Mr. and Mrs. Willard White re turned Friday night after attend ing a convention in New Orleans, La. Cates Funeral services for Henry Gra dy Cates, 66, of Durham, were con ducted Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Clements Chapel by Dr. W. B. Strickland. Interment followed in Zebulon Cemetery at 3 p.m. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Charles Addison of Jacksonville. Fla.; two sons, H. G. Cates, Jr., of Durham and James D. Lynch died at his home in Wendell Friday morning of a heart attack. He was connected with the To-! bacco Market for 40 years and | was a retired farmer. He was a director in the Wendell Industries, Inc., affiliated with the Wake County A.S.C. office. Tax Lister, and Registrar for Marks Creek Township. He was a member of the Wendell Baptist Church for more than 50 years, serving in the capacity of Secretary of the Sunday School for 25 years. FuneTal services were conducted at the Wendell Baptist Church Sat urday at 3 p.m. The Rev. William H. Vinson, Jr., officiated. Inter ment was in Greenmount Ceme tery. He is survived by his wife, the former Jennie Knott; a son, John Irving, Jr., of Goldsboro; two granddaughters, three sisters and five brothers. • Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Baugh held open house on Friday and Satur day at their home on Third Street for their Christmas Gift Shop and the new florist work shop which was completed last week. Refresh ments were served to all friends who called.. The name was drawn Saturday night for the lovely prize which was awarded to Mrs. Annie Green of Selma, Route 1. • Ivan Massey, a former resident of Wendell, died in Miami, Fla., Saturday where he lived with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Massey. Graveside services were held Tuesday at 3 o’clock at the Massey home place where Mrs. Massey is buried. Rev. Joe F. Roach, former pastor of Mr. | Massey officiated. Mrs. Will Stott and Mrs. E. T. Boyette entertained on Saturday at the home of Mrs. Boyette on Third Street at two parties at 3 and 8 o’clock. The home was lovely through out with fall flowers. Tables were placed in the den and living room. Refreshments were served from the dining room table which held a beautiful centerpiece with light ed tapers. Mrs. Luther Ledford poured coffee at the afternoon party. Mints, nuts, party sand wiches, cakes and frozen ices in the shape of fruits were served. Mrs. Horton’s sister, Miss Kit Anderson of Durham, spent last week with her while she is recovering from pneumonia. The Varina Horton Circle met Thursday night with Mrs. Horton with 11 members present. The program was given by a group of the circle. Refreshments consisted of mixed sandwiches, cookies, nuts and punch. Miss Jane Alligood of Wendell spent Sunday afternoon with Miss Nancy Hinnant. Mrs. Maudie Hood visited her brother, Rayford Corbett in Rex Hospital, last week who has a broken back from a fall. Mrs. K. R. Hinnant visited Mrs. Paul Horton Saturday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Agan of Kin ston spent the weekend with her parents, the John Starnes. Mrs. Alice Hood spent Thurs day with her daughter, Mrs. T. Y. Puryear.
