Sunday, April 7, 1968 3 rm scaurs. 0 Bv HAUVEY ELLIOTT of The Dally Tar Heel Staff It's Oscartime again! After months of arguing whether The Graduate was a better film that Bonnie and Clyde, wondering where five Best Song nominees were going to come from try to think of five songs you heard from a movie -this year and waiting for the annual op portunity for star-gazing, movie fans will "have at it" tomorrow night. The Academy Awards Ceremonies will be presented on channel 5 at 10 p.m. And once again the master of ceremonies will be lord-of-the-quip Bob Hope. Hope has already said that "this will be remembered as The Year Oscar Came Home." True. For the past seven or eight years, nominees have been almost exclusively British. Filmgoers were begin ning to wonder if the American film industry had any future. This year, however, the tables are turned. Only three out of 20 actor-nominees are British Dame Edith Evans, Audrey Hepburn and Cecil Kellaway. The Americans could - well make a clean sweep. The - telecast will include many features now familiar to annual Oscar-watchers. The five nominated sonss fves. car something extra is added for Oscar's 40th birthday. Last year, a segment spotlighting the Oscar-winners for Best Song throughout the years was well-received. This year, the entire history of the Awards is reviewed, using film clips from 33 Oscar winners. The feature will be divided imo four parts. Each segment will be narrated by an award winning actress from the era, featuring scenes from Best Acting performances and a longer sequence from the Best Picture of each decade. The first segment of W JO- 11- (&ett on the program. And film segments from each of the five nominated pictures are shown before the award is presented. . But this year, a little 'Bonnie and Clyde' "Steals Ten, Nominations . . . will it rob The Graduate of Best Picture Oscar? there are some) are performed Academy history (1928-1938) win oe narrated Dy Kawanne Hepburn, herself a nominee this year for Guess Who's Coming To Dinner: The Best Picture of that decade, It Hap pened One Night, is featured, along tith scenes nom these performances: Al Jolson in The Jazz Singer Mary Pickford in Co quette Bette D avals in Dangerous Spencer Tracy in Captains Courageous Katherine Hepburn in Morning Glory The most honored film from the second decade, 1938-1948, is Gone With The Wind. Olivia deHavilland, the only surviving principal from that picture, will narrate. The scene from Wind with Scarlett O'Hara stepping over the bodies of dying soldiers in Atlanta will .be shown for the first time on television. Others featured will be: James Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy Bing Crosby in Going My Way Gary Cooper hi Sergeant York Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce Bette Davis in Jezebel The third interval will be narrated by Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco. Two pic tures, each honored equally, will represent this segment: From Here To Eternity and On The Waterfront. Other Oscar-winners shown will be: Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday Humphrey Bogard in The African Queen Ingred Bergman in Anas tasia Gary Cooper in High Noon Grace Kelly in The Coun try Girt The final segment of Oscar history, covering the years ffrom 1953-1968, will be nar rated by another current nominee, Ann Bancroft. The highlighted picture will be Ben Hur, winner of more Oscars than any other picture in Academy history. Featured performances will include: Sidney Poitier in Lilies of the Field Patricia Neal in Hud Gregory Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird Anne Bancroft in The Miracle Worke Elizabeth Taylor in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf ? The nominees this year are a strange lot. On one side, there are the old pros of the business. Spencer Tracy. Katharine Hepburn. Edith Evans. Cecil Kellaway. Then there are the newcomers. Two years ago, who had ever heard of Faye Runaway, Michael J. Pollard, Dustin Hoffman, or Katharine Ross? And who would ever suspect that Oscar-winning performances could ever be brought out of pretty-boy War ren Beatty or George Kennedy, a bit player who got his "break" as Dragline in Cool Hand Luke? And this is also the year of the multiple nominees. Ten nominations each for Bonnie and Clyde .and Gness Who's Coming to Dinner. Nine for Doctor Dolittle. For The Graduate and- Thoroughly Modern Millie, seven each. And to prove that there is a little good in all of us, that there is something worthwhile in the worst of things guess Who got a nomination. None other than Valley of the Dolls. Yes, a nomination for Best Musical score may save this movie from complete oblivion. In the Best Foreign , Film category, only two of the nominees have had wide U.S. release, and these seem to be the two front-runners.They are the Czech film Closely Watched Trains and Claude Lelouch's Live For Life. Some of Hollywood's brightest lights will be giving out Oscars this year. Natalie Wood whatever happened to Natalie Wood? will be a presenter. Barora Streisand will make her first appearance on an Oscar Show. Patty Duke, Sidney Poitier, Elke Sommer, Julie Andrews and Rock. Hudson will also "do the honors." Even some of the nominees will "moonlight" with presen tation of oiher awards. Warren Beatty, Carol Channing, Dame Edith Evans, Audrey Hepburn, Dustin Hoffman, Katharine Ross and Rod Stiger, each hoping for success in his or her own category, will present awards to omers. " car o o t V f Nominees Rod Steigef ik Dame Edith Evans . . . current favorites for 'Actor, Actress' Oscars also gives her ten, but Miss Hepburn has only been honored once. If Spencer Tracy wins this year's Oscar for Best Actor, it will make his third award, tying him with Brennan's record. It would also be the first posthumous Oscar ever awarded. In fact, several precedents could be set tomorrow night. If Paul Newman were to win for CoolHand Luke, it would make the only living husband-and-wife team to each hold Oscars. (His wife, Joanne Woodward, was 1937's Best Actress for The Three Faces of Eve.)- Both Bonnieand Clyde and Guess WWho's Coming to Din ner are nominated in all four acting categories. If either of the films were to garner all four awards, this would be a first. And if Dame Edith Evans were to win the Best Actress Award, at SO, she will be the oldest performer ever to win an acting Oscar. What are their chances? What are the odds? As mentioned earlier, Oscar is fickle. You can't second guess him and you can't predict what he's going todo. Car Buffs do it! Campus Calendar V7T" - V; J ' .AH Illl. , 1 1 X"-" ? You can call him fickle. You can call him a status ' symbol. And you can call him un fair. But whatever, you say, you can't describe Oscar as "predictable." Movie fans have tried to guess the winners in the past, but there are always a few surprises. Elizabeth Taylor won her first Oscar for Butterfield 8, immediately following her close brush with death. Her comment about the film? "It stunk." Bette Davis won an Oscar for Dangerous a year after she had been overlooked for her immortal performance in Of Human Bondage. , Oscar; also hates to honor a film r star too often. Why was Clark Gable overlooked when the ten Oscars were doled out to Gone With The Wind? Probably, because he had won several years before, for It Happened One Night. The only actor to win three acting Oscars is Walter Bren nan. He won all three in the supporting-actor category in the late 1930's. No ther. actor or actress has equalled his record. Bette Davis has been nominated ten times, but has won only twice. Katharine Hepburn's current nomination Are You Missing Out on Our Monday Nite Specials After 5 P.M. Select from: Re.
