Mvtfr fO-C Ctr O fiZT CiTCtNS CANK. & Tu;T COMPANY Dy ELIZABETH DANIEL Staff Writer Lock your door and never walk alone are two basic rules for avoiding campus security problems, University police officials sayi. "The best! advice we can give is simply lock your door," says Lt. Charles Mauer, an investigator with the University Police. There has never been a report of forced entry into a dorm room when the door was unlocked, Mauer says. Patrolman Ned Comar, of the University rjolice, says "A student will go to the bathroom planning to return in a few minutes and when he returns he's been robbed. "It doesn't even take 10 minutes; one took only eight seconds," Comar adds!. Pocketbooks, stereo components, calculators, portable televisions and anything else that can be scooped up quickly and sold easily, are targets for thieves, he says. "The freshmen just aren't used to locking doors. They'll learn soon enough, though, when either they or one of their friends get ripped off," Comar says. Bicycle thefts are always a big problem. Last year, 97 bicycles were reported stolen. University police officials recommend students buy bicycle locks and that they buy lock caps for their automobile gasoline tanks. An engraver is available from the University Police for students to mark their valuables, Comar says. There were no reports of muggings or armed robberies on campus last year, but three rapes were reported. Officials say such crimes are often the result of walking alone. Any student threatened with rape should stay calm and talk to the attacker, Mauer says. "She should let him know she is a human being and not just an object," he advises. "But, the major thing to do is escape." Last spring, Siler City senior Joe Buckner offered an answer to the problem of assaults on campus. He organized the Rape and Assault Prevention Escort service. R.A.P.E. offers male students to escort women offers to North and South Campus dorms, Granville Towers, sorority houses, McCauley Street and to Fowler's Food Store. This year the R.A.P.E. service will be headed by Mangum resident Summey Orr. For more information about the service, call 933-8S54.
