The new film always is compared to the original and the comparison is usually negative. The audience also may fed they have missed cut on something in the sequel if they didn't see the original.- Sometimes, though, a sequel will bring together the ingredients needed to make a successful and enjoyable movie even for those who haven't seen the original. OH God! Book II is such a movie. Although the film touches on a subject many might consider offensive for the cinema, with light humor and a special hidden meaning, it avoids offending "anyone, j Once again, George Burns stars as the Divine Creator. Although most people don't think of God sitting around in heaven throwing out one-liners, Burns portrays God in both a serious and humorous ! manner showing, perhaps, some of his human aspects. The story begins when a 10-year-old girl named Tracey, played by newcomer By TOM MOORE Arts Editor Love on the Run is the fifth chapter in Francois Truffaut's autobiographical Antoine Doinel series. Truffaut created the character in his classic film about the perils of childhood, The 400 Blows, in 1959. And over the past twenty years in Love at Twenty, Stolen Kisses, Bed and Board and Love on the Run Doinel has grown from a troubled youth to a womanizing novelist, Truffaut in Love on the Run smoothly combines clips from the earlier films to show the continuous conflicts in Eoinel's life. It's fascinating to watch the actors age, especkdly the wide-eyed Jean-Pierre Leaud who plays Doinel and to see how their behavior has changed over the years. And it's interesting to see how Truffaut has shifted the series from heartfelt drama to romantic comedy. Doinel in Love on the Run is still troubled, but the world he faces doesn't seem as hostile as the world he faced as a youth. 1 r L- Nightly 7:30 9:30 n .4 Ycu'll Find ths Cost LATE m i yit ji.6,''"'m V Fri. a Sat. Her parents are divorced, so every weekend she and her father go to a Chinese restaurant and a movie. While her father is away, one of the. fortune cookies starts to move. Tracey opens the cookie. "Meet me in the lounge. God. " Tracey doesn't understand what is going' on, so she doesn't move. Soon, another cookie moves and Tracey quickly breaks it open. "I mean you Tracey. God. " This time Tracey quickly goes to the lounge where she meets God for the first time. He talks to her for a while, but she never sees him. Later that afternoon, he appears to her again this time visibly and tells Tracey that he wants her to think of a slogan to advertise God. Tracey and her friends come up with the slogan "Think God" and begin to spread it around the city, writing on churches, buses and anytl -mg else eoli PLITT THEATRE REDUCED ADMISSION'TICKETSY ACCEDTED AT ALL CAROLINA ATTRACTIONS I j Matines Daily -J at 3:00 5:10 CAROLINA CLASSICS SSRIIES " 7 ' V '. The idea doesn't go over well with the adults in the community; Tracey is suspended from school; and . there are attempts to put the 10-yar-c'd in a mental institution for thinking she had talked to and seen God. The humor is one of the strong parts of the movie and it shows up often. Once, while Tracey is watching the Johnny Carson show, she is.sujprised to see God come on stage rather than Carson, "Why not," he quips, "he gets everybody else to replace him." In another 'scene, Tracey has put so much time into the "Think God" program that she is far behind in her work at school and has been getting in trouble for it. She decides to' quit working on the project, but God is insistent. Says a frustrated Tracey, "Why don't you pick on someone who isn't behind in their homework." Aisde from the humor, Oh God! Book II brings out, in a quiet way, the message that people don't really think about God as much as they should. As Burns says in the movie, "People have to be reminded that I'm still around." r" J '.
