r 10, ir0Th- Dy Tr H XT The 'Famous' comes to a close Wednesday, Nov - cy no::man cannada Staff Writer After piling up a 27-1 record over the past two seasons and-winning Atlantic Coast Conference championships both years, the UNC wrestling team faces the unusual role of the underdog in the conference race this season. "We're not going to go undefeated iuis year, UNC coach Dill Lam said. "Cut our young wrestlers have a good attitude and we should be competitive by ' the end of the year." The Tar Heels, after winning 24 straight dual matches going into . the 15CO-1S31 season, lost four starters from last year's squad via graduation. Two of those, Joe Galli and Carter Mario, were former ACC individual champions. In addition, Bobby Monaghan and CD. Mockboth starters on the 1979-1930 team have been redshirted by Lam this year. "There is probabiy only one person in the country rated ahead of Mock right now, and he will be graduating this year," Lam said. "And one of C.D.'s goals has been to be a national champion." Lam said the redshirting of Mock and Monaghan would benefit the team as well as the two wrestlers. "We had a good recruiting year and if the freshmen can get a year of experience under their belts, we can come back in with Mock and Monaghan next year and be one of the top five or 10 (teams) in the country," Lam said. "We've proven that we can compete on the conference level and now we want to compete on the national level." Still, even with his hopes for the future, Lam admits it will be difficult for the Tar Heels to defend their ACC title. "Our chances are very slim. We will have six or maybe seven freshmen in the starting lineup and it shouldn't be that way. A lot of our success will depend on how these freshmen come along." Although there are no seniors on the UNC squad this season, the team is not aawa Lj W a-- Ww J -J . Six lettermen return from last year's squad including All-ACC performers Dave Cooke and Jan Michaels. Cooke piled up an . impressive 2 5-9 record and won an ACC individual championship in his first year as a starter. Michaels, at 153 pounds, gained a starting spot last season as a freshman and went undefeated in dual meet action on his way to the ACC title. He also was selected as the top freshman wxestler in the nation. Lam said that the overall inexperience of the squad had caused the most problems in preseason workouts. "We've had to work on fundamentals," he said. "With a seasoned team, you can talk about something and the team will know what you're talking about, but we're not a seasoned team yet. We'll have some mistakes made that will just be freshmen mistakes, but the team has a good attitude and they're working hard." This weekend the Tar Heels will sponsor the Carolina Open Tournament, replacing the previous Carolina Invitational Tournament. Lam said he could see several advantages in opening the tournament up rather than inviting a few select teams. "One thing is that State and Duke will not be sending teams this year. We just felt like we were seeing too much of each other," Lam said. "Aside from that, a team can have more than one man per weight and it'll give a coach a good chance to look at all of his players." ' The tournament also will be open to college graduates. "I think it'll make the tournament better," Lam said. "The competition will be a lot tougher than it normally would." rz3 lost Cz found LOST Lars l!U m!i Saaioycd. Nds tiedks,! aKeatloo. Owaer frantic. C&U SS7-S7S3. Reward. He did not play in the 10-7 loss to Kentucky and carried just five times for 25 yards the following week against Richmond, the first time he ran in Kenan Stadium. But the third week, on the artificial turf at Northwestern, he carried' the ball 10 times and finished with 101 yards. Maybe he deserved his . nickname after all, many thought. Three football seasons later, Lawrence has a chance to become only the second runner in NCAA history to gain 1,000 yards for four seasons. Greats such asf O.J. Simpson only had three years, to play before the freshman eligibility rule was changed, but since first-year players became eligible, only Pittsburgh's Tony Dorsett has topped the 1,000-yard mark four times. "It's very important for me to get 1 ,000 yards this season," said Lawrence, who needs just 25 yards Saturday against Duke to reach his goal. "There have been a lot of great backs in college. It surprised me to know that I would be the second one to do that. It's a great feeling for me." For Lawrence, this Saturday also will be the third time Duke has been the opponent when the 1,000-yard barrier comes into sight. It's also happened in the final game in each of the last three seasons. Crijmy Streater ' ready 'for Blue -Devil air By DAVID POOLE 'Assistant Sports Editor ."; . Dick Crum expects to see the football flying through the air a great deal Saturday when the Duke Blue Devils come to Chapel Hill to play North Carolina, and oni of Crunv's key defensive backs couldn't be happier.. . "I'm glad he (Duke quarterback Ben Bennett) likes to throw the ball over the middle," Steve Streater said Tuesday. "It's going to make it very interesting." 1 "They'll throw the ball all over the place," Crum told reporters at his weekly press conference. "It's going to take a total defensive effort on our part."; It will be up to Streater and his mates in the Carolina pass defense to stop Bennett, who threw 62 times against Wake Forest two weeks ago. "Getting 25 should be easy, but you never know." ' Lawrence's most memorable of the three Duke games was the 1973 contest, as Carolina came from a touchdown behind in the final minute to win 16-15 when Lawrence scored on a draw play from 11 yards out with 13 seconds to play. ' - He carried four times on that 61-yard drive and gained 167 yards for the game, but he most remembers the touchdown scamper. "That play still sticks in my mind," Lawrence said. "When I'm not doing too much, I'll come over to . the fieldhouse and lock at the films of that play on the big screen. It was a big moment for me." ' - While Lawrence's career has included many bright spots, including a 2S6-yard day against Virginia his freshman season, there also have been question marks. Nagging injuries most notably groin pulls in 1973 and 1979 prompted people to ask what Lawrence might do if he stayed healthy an entire season. .This fall, Lawrence has avoided injuries. He points to two reasons: a better flexibility program and the presence of backup tailback Kelvin Bryant, who has rushed for 840 yards . this year, and, with a good performance Saturday, could join Lawrence in gaining 1,000 yards. Bryant's presence, while making the Tar Heel backfield one of the most potent in the country, has meant less playing time for Lawrence. He said this season following the Wake Forest game, he was frustrated about a lack of playing completed 38 of those passes and set a new conference record with 469 yards passing. "Bennett came into their program and they needed a quarterback,". Crum said. "They'll throw the ball to a lot of different people." , Stopping Bennett and the Blue Devils' passing attack will take a team effort, Streater said. "It's going to ' take the efforts of all 1 1 of us out there," he said. "But I feel that if he comes out throwing, we'll be all right. "If he puts the ball up as many times as he has against other teams, I think we'll intercept a couple," Streater said.. i Crum said he was pleased with the effort his team turned in against Virginia in the second half last weekend.
