Little is really expected, and Duke doesn't like that a bit. i . i By CLIFTON BARNES Ji. Kenny Dennard is back, but Ci'.l Fester left for South Carolina AST season the Duke basketball team went to the finals of the Mideast regional. r This year the Blue Devils are picked by Atlantic Coast Conference basketball writers to finish sixth not in the country but in the ACC. "Being picked as low as we are is a slap in the face," senior co-captain Gene Banks says. "We feel we have the ability to get to the NCAA finals," But if Duke is to make the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight year, it will have to do so without a center. Mike Gminski, Duke's all-time leading scorer and rebounder graduated last spring. "The center problem is no big deal," senior co-captain Kenny Dennard says. "We're gong to run an offense that doesn't need a center." That offense has been brought in by new head coach Mike Krzyzewski (pronounced Sheshefsi in Poland, Kreshefski in North Carolina), who replaced Bill Foster, who left Duke after six years to coach at South Carolina. Coach K, as his players and the tongue-tied call him, says the Blue Devils are not full of quickness. : . The fact that the tallest player is 6-foot-8 prompted the change to the motion offense. The system is different for Krzyzewski, too. because he utilized deliberate offense at Army for five years. "It's a new system and there are new rules," he says. "It's just a matter of getting to know everybody." - There's also a new defensive system. Gone is Foster's 2-3 zone. Krzyzewski likes an aggressive, man-to-man defense. "I think you have to build a team around its defense," he says. "I guarantee one thing, we'll play good defense." ANKS and Dennard like what Krzyzewski has done. "Coach K has brought over positive thinking," Banks says. "He appreciates us, and we appreciate him and his knowledge of the game." V "It's going to be a neat transition," Dennard says. "We were getting predictable. . .We're going to surprise some of the big boys this year." With Gminski gone, Dennard will have to do several things. He will have to score more than last year (10 a game) and he'll have to rebound more than last season (6.5 a game). Banks, who finally decided against turning pro after his junior season, tries to de emphasize Gminski's absence. "Kenny and I were the emotional leaders and Bobby (Bender) and Mike were the legal captains," Banks says. "Mike was quiet, kept to himself. The younger guys would come to me." Back to form the nucleus along with Banks and Dennard is 6-5 junior Vince Taylor. Taylor scored a little more than 10 points a game at guard and led the team in steals with 53. This year, in addition to the big guard spot, he will see playing time at point guard and small forward. Krzyzewski says that his only signee, 6-5 Doug McNeely from El Paso, Texas, will see a lot of playing time from the beginning. Six-foot-8 sophomore Allen Williams and 6-2 sophomore Tom Emma should join the Banks-Dennard-Taylor combination in the starting lineup. Williams was a substitute for Gminski, and Emma was a backup for Bender, so neither saw much action last season. Mike Tissaw, 6-8 sophomore, and Jim Suddath, 6-6 senior, will give Banks and Dennard a rest while 6-4 guard Chip Engelland most likely will play behind Taylor. But for the Blue Devils to reach the NCAAs, three fellows named Banks, Dennard and Taylor will have to lead the way. Rebound Point I No. Avg.
