- Thursday. December 4, 1980'The Daily Tar H-el 5 r Si - nJ I C 3 J So you think, the only people who play hockey are brawling Canadians wish toothless smiles? The UNC Hockey Club is out to dispel that misconception. The team opens its season tonight with a scrimmage against Duke in the Daniel Doone Ice Rink at 8:15. The UNC club will be out for revenge. Last year UNC beat Duke four times . during the regular season but lost the league championship game in the last 12 seconds. n h a r , W-r -. By LINDA ROBERTSON "We're ready to show them who's boss after that heartbreaker last year," club President Dill Detmer said. The club went 12-2 last season in a league that includes Duke, N.C. State and UNC-Greensboro. "We have a lot of new blood this year and our forward lines will be dominated by these new kids," Detmer said. "Defense will be our real strength that's where our seasoned veterans are. The team is the best since I've been here." "The team has grown from a ramshackle group of hackers to a fine organization," Tom Morss said. "Every year a new nucleus of four to five solid players comes in." The team has a 12-gamc schedule this year and will make trips to New Orleans and Washington, D.C. Defense will be led by captain Ken Mountcastle, Ned Manning, Scott Rehm, Morss and Brian Goray. The goalie is Richard Binkley. Dave Dickson, last year's leading scorer, is temporarily out with an injury. In ice hockey, the team is made up of three forwards on offense, two defensemen and the goalie. "Every couple of minutes the forward fine will go out and another line will jump in," Morss said. "Since you're sprinting all out there's the need to alternate the lines in and out. The defense changes less often." Players also are taken out to sit in the penalty box. Hockey is not exactly a tame sport. Muhammad Ali took the easy way out when he chose boxing. "Hockey players have to sort of have a disregard for their bodies," Morss said. "You're going to get banged up, teeth knocked out, poked in the eyes, a stick in your ribs. When you're skating around at 35 mph you've got to expect to get slammed into the boards. We're playing with sticks and skating on blades, so naturally people are going . to get hurt." "If someone gives you a cheap shot you can't be easily provoked or you'll get thrown out," Mountcastle said. "Just remember his number. We don't get mad, we get even. But you have to be somewhat reserved you can't totally mutilate someone." "Body-checking is an essential part of the sport, but you can't hit or use your stick maliciously," Detmer said. Other teams in the league depend on their hatchet men and try to make you fight back." Hockey fans may overlook a fascinating dimension of the game the fact that the players are on skates. Racing over the ice on blades an eighth of an inch thick has become second nature to them, but that does not belittle the importance of skating. "Skating is the game," Mountcastle said. "You have to skate to score, you have to skate to get the puck, keep the puck and fake people out. People tend to see skating as a given and only see the violence. They miss a lot." At schools like Michigan and Cornell, students line up for hockey tickets like they wait-for basketball tickets at UNC. Mountcastle does not foresee any Bobby Orr's coming out of North Carolina. "This is basically a football and basketball state. There's a lack of a hockey tradition here and not enough people around willing to put out the effort to develop youth hockey programs. There is a good future at UNC and it's good having Duke nearby with lots of northerners." "I'm from Massachusetts and when winter rolls around it's just natural to go out and skate in your backyard," Morss said. "You don't mind falling down when you're eight years old, so you learn how to skate." Last year the UNC Hockey Club watched steady improvement in fan attendance at the Hillsborough rink.
