Can North Carolina play on an even keel against No. 2-ranked conference rival Clemson? "This week's game is no more a must win than last week's or next week's," Crum said at his weekly press conference Tuesday afternoon. Quarterback Scott Stankavage, who Crum said would start Saturday, said the game will be a little different. "The coach wants us to pick it up a little bit," Stankavage said. "We want a little more intensity and concentration. You might say we want to play on a higher even keel. "It's a relief psychologically that it's finally here," he said. "Everybody the fans and media has been talking about it like a countdown to Clemson or something." And with 60 percent of the ABC-TV market watching, what better time to win a big game, get back in the major bowl picture and maybe even re-introduce one Kelvin Bryant. "It's something to think about," Crum said. But the doctors have to release the tailback and then Crum has to give his OK. "The doctors are still evaluating him," Crum said. "It's a judgment thing. He hasn't hit for five weeks; it's like starting the season all over again." What Tar Heel fan would not want that again? Bryant only scored 15 touchdowns and had over 500 yards rushing in just over three games, and he never did play an entire game. Bryant worked out in pads Tuesday at practice and ran with the first team, and was even knocked down a couple of times with the large arm pads they use for contact work. But doctors are still saying that his leg is only back to 75 per cent of its normal strength, although physical therapy has kept him ready otherwise. Bryant said after the N.C. State game that he thought he would be ready for the Clemson game. But if Crum does like he did for thp Marvland game. by starting Ethan Horton at tailback nobody will know until the Heels take the field. "That will be a plus if No. 44 goes running out there," Stan kavage said. "The fans might just blow the roof off the place." But the depth chart released Tuesday has Horton at tailback. Horton, converted from quarterback, ran for 94 yards on 26 carries in UNC's 17-10 victory over Maryland. '(Reserve tailback) Bob (Ratlif 0 had not been playing as well as he should have," Crum said. "I thought (Ethan) was a better tailback bigger, stronger and a little faster." Stankavage praises Horton also. "Ethan's a great athlete and a big young man," he said. "There are going to be some colli sions when he's in there. That's what we need against a physical defensive team like Clemson." The North Carolina running attack, however, is what led some to say that the Tar Heels were too conservative against Maryland last Saturday. "Well, it was Stankavage's first start and we were in fairly poor field position in the second half," Crum said. "But we , can't afford to be that conservative against a team like Clemson. Plus, I don't think we'll need to because the guys have been there a week." ; Crum said that he did not expect Rod Elkins to play at all against Clemson. Stankavage said he was ready to assume the duty against this week. "We'll both be ready," Stankavage said. "Rod's the man around here. He's one of the best quarterbacks in the country. I don't think I've taken his job away by any means. "I don't think there's anything altered because I'm in there," he said. "Out there on the field, I don't want there to be any dif ference between No. 10 (Elkins) and No. 14 (Stankavage)." Notes: Split end Jon Richardson's brother Mark plays defen sive back for Clemson and will be assigned to play Jon on some coverages. "I've never played against him before," Richardson said. "I; hope he approaches me as a regular player. If he gets a good shot at me I hope he takes it ." Nov. 8 8:00 PM Memorial Hall Tickets: $2.50 Sponsored by the Union and Chapel Hill Concert Series Regionals next for field hockey By LEE SULLIVAN DTH Staff Writer The North Carolina field hockey team is only two victories away from a trip to the national tournament. For the fifth straight year, the UNC squad captured the state title and goes in to regional tournament play with a defi nite shot at a final four berth. In the state tournament, Lisa Todd and Mary Stewart supplied the goals in UNC's 2-1 win over Appalachian and Mary Sen tementes scored the only goal the team , needed in the 1-0 revenge victory over year-long nemesis Duke. The Blue Devils had beaten the Tar Heels twice during the regular season and tmce in a pre-season tournament this year. ; The regional tournament begins Friday in Virginia and based on recent perform ances, the Tar Heels have to be consider ed one of the favorites. After capturing the state title, UNC won the Deep-South tournament. By the end of the weekend, the UNC squad had chalked up a six game winning streak and two tournament titles. "We are playing very, very well right now;'.' coach Karen Shelton said. "We are playing what is called 'cerebral hockey'; we're thinking while we play.' I'm confident that we can do well in the Sports Men's Soccer at Campbell Volleyball at Guilford regionals if we continue to improve and . don't get over-excited." Shelton said she was worried that the team might get too anxious and overlook its first tournament opponent, Eastern Kentucky. The winner of that match will battle the winner of the Virginia-Duke game for the regional championship. "We can win the regional and I think the girls realize they can't look to Satur day until they get by Friday," Shelton ex plained. In any case UNC moves into the week end tournament on a very positive note and with a legitimate chance to win an in vitation to the national championship. AP Poll 1. Pittsburgh (49) 7-M) 1,283 2.
