Thursday, February 4, 1932The Daily Tar Heel7 Water polo club j " ' tS4- splashes ahead What do you get when you throw a bunch of graduate students into a swimming pool? A brain trust on marine biology? Er-not quite. This group of graduate students is known as the UNC water polo club. Times have changed since the club's ori gins, though, and now there are quite a few undergrads underwater, too. President Gerry Cohn, a sophomore water enthusiast, said he had never seen water polo until he came to Chapel Hill. "I was a swimmer in high school, and my coach men-, tioned the water polo club," he said. "I didn't take it all that seriously at first." Cohn still isn't too solemn. "No one really takes it all that seriously; we just have a good time. After practice, we go uptown, or to parties. "There's a lot of joking around, a lot of spirit," he said: IM's & Clubs By MORRIS HAYWOOD "About two-thirds of the team are graduate students' Cohn said. That puts a slight damper on the team's chances to participate in the NCAA tournament. "Because we have some graduate students, we are in eligible to participate in the tournament," he said. It's a tournament that's only for undergraduates. That doesn't matter to Cohn or the others, though. "We're just out to have a good time," he said. "It would be nice (to participate in the tournament), but we're not looking for that. "We've never had too much of a problem with graduate students (being on the team). Like I said, we're just out to have a good time. - " ' - .'. , ; , l -31 . 5 G0&IMi win t mMUmM Cam tigh Lx S) - - J Water polo players scrsmbld for bs!l ... sport requires blend of quickness and strength Does that mean competition doesn't matter? "We came in fourth in the Southern Conference in the fall." Cohn said that the regular season for water polo is during the fall, but several matches are always squeezed in during the spring. The team will face Georgia in a match Sunday, 1-4 I Mm p.m., in the Bowman Gray pool. Cohn is not sure how the team will do. "We're pretty out of shape' he said. "We'll probably do a lot of substituting. We'll have to do a lot of passing and have control of the ball. We'll have to have a solid defense. "It's land of hard to tell (how we'll do)," he said. "We just got started this semester." Cohn and the team will be looking for strong per formances from Ty Millett, Dave Habel, Greg Simon, ' Tom Spangler, Mark Tommerdahl, Tom Turpin and Phil Dickey. "Phi! Is a mcd school student Tic's probably the best' shooter on the team," Cohn said. "He's a left-hander, and he can spin the ball pretty hard at an incredible angle." : Water polo is a sport that seems to be a cross between soccer, rugby, basketball and swimming. Just imagine Ralph Sampson trying to pass or throw a ball into a goal while swimming in water 20 feet deep. The object is to get the ball into the opponent's goal. There are seven players on each team with one playing goalie. The others try to spread around much like players in Dean Smith's four corners offense, waiting for the open shot. It is a very tiring sport, as the players must swim, pass, and catch at the same time. Cohn is hoping f that ah advertising campaign that began Wednesday will help draw more people to the club. He said about 20 people participate each semester. "We are getting some posters up to advertise the meet," he said. "We're calling it the 'sport of the future.' ; -';.'' And it's not just for men. Out of the twenty or so par ticipants are five or six women, three of whom are of ficers of the club. Cohn said he hoped more women would try out in the future. "It's a good sport," he said. "The clock keeps run ning and never stops. "People are always interested in Carolina basketball, and I think they would enjoy water polo if they saw it. (Like basketball) It's fast and exciting." Notes: Today play begins in faculty-staff basketball. Friday is the deadline for entering IM squash tournament, inaugural grail volleyball tournament, and the second annual Valentine's Day Couple's Competition. Monday, Feb. 8, play begins in IM open Squash tournament. By STEPHANIE GRAHAM DTH Staff Writer CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va The UNC women's basketball team overcame a six-point halftime deficit and survived a late Virginia rally to defeat the Cavaliers 62-60 Wednesday. ' - Forward Tresa Brown and point guard Eileen McCann each scored 12 points, to lead the Tar Heels, now 13-7 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the ACC. After shooting just 36 percent and be ing outrebounded 23-6 in the first half, Carolina trailed the Cavs 35-29 at inter mission. Three minutes into the second. half a jump shot by McCann knotted the score at 35. "I think we just upped the intensity level in the second half' UNC coach .Jennifer Alley said. "We were veryjflat in the first half and we were not moving of fensively or defensively." From then on the lead changed hands, neither team holding more than a three point lead at anytime. t Finally, with 2:37 left to play, Meredith White, hit a jumper from the corner to give the Tar Heels the lead at 60-59. : Then it happened. '' Cindy Miller was whistled for a per: sonal foul and a technical foul on a con troversial call. That sent Alley to the scorer's table to argue. ! Melissa Mahony hit only one of four free throws, however, and Tresa Brown rebounded a Virginia miss with 1:24 re maining. The Tar Heels remained poised and White sank another jumper to make it 62-60, which turned out to be the final score. "I was real intense at the end of the game," said White, who finished with seven points. "I had an off game in the first half but I just fried to play very in tensely at the end of the game." The last minute of the game was perhaps the longest 60 seconds the Tar Heel women have played all year. A Virginia turnover on a steal by Henrietta Walls resulted only in a UNC turnover, one of 26 for the game, with :44 remaining. But it was not over yet. Virginia's Cathy Grimes missed a shot with :24 left, and Brown rebounded for the Tar Heels. With 21 seconds remaining, a blocking foul was called on UNC's Miller on an out-of-bounds play. Another missed Virginia shot resulted in the seventh Cavalier team foul with four seconds left in the game. Miller missed the front end of a one-and-one with :04 left, and a jump ball was called on the rebound. Virginia won . the jump, but time elasped before it could get off a shot. ; ; Carolina coach Jennifer Alley com plained that no time ran off the clock during the scramble after the missed free throw and before the jump ball call. "As close as it was, I never felt like the : kids lost confidence," Alley said. "We ; never thought we would not win it. "I told the kids to take good care of the basketball at the end and just take good shots." I ift hie cnirit.Q L.
