Thursday, April. 1, 1982The Daily Tar Heel5 Disc club throws tournament It's that time of year again. You know, spring, when people's minds go from books to beaches and students begin to pay homage to the Almighty Sun. Of course, Chapel Hill's perfect weather inspires some kind of activity. Hence Frisbees. But that leading indicator of spring's arrival known as Frisbee throwing is not just a leisure activity; it is a full-fledged sport, sanctioned by the. Sports Club Council. The UNC Disc Club offers a variety of activities centered on the fine art of Frisbee throwing. "We have golf, ultimate and freestyle," said President John Marty, a senior public relations and political science major. "The thrust is for everyone to come out and have a good time. IM's & CLUBS By MORRIS HAYWOOD "In ultimate, you cannot run with the Frisbee. You have to pass it. It's a lot like soccer; the play never stops." Marty said the club has been around for about four years and that membership is climbing. "Every Sunday (when the club practices) we see four or five new faces," he said. "We average about 40 to 45 people." This weekend, the club will host the Carolina Invitational Ultimate Frisbee Tournament which begins at 9:30 Saturday with a meeting for captains to determine pairings. Play will begin at 10 a.m. ' "We will have teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky," Marty said. "It will be on Carmichael Field, and we'll have refreshments, T-shirts, and there will be an exhibition game by some 12 to 14 year olds." There is no admission charge, Mar ty said, and he is hoping for a large turnout. . All Rights Reserved "We're not exactly in a league per se," said vice president Brian Cusak, a junior business major. "But we'd like to get one started." "I've always been interested in Frisbee," he said. "I wanted to start playing competitively, and I jumped at the chance here. "Ultimate is a growing sport," he said. "I truly believe it should be ac commodated into intercollegiate com petition. "You don't have to be extra fisi to play, and it's so inexpensive " Marty pointed out a problem thai many clubs have been facing: that of participation versus competition. "On one hand, it's for everyone," he said. "On the other hand, we have a problem when we go to compete; it's really tough to decide (who gets to play)." Marty does feel that Frisbee can be more than it is. "At State, they have a credit course in Frisbee," he said. "We're trying to get an ultimate Frisbee league established." Marty encouraged people to come to the Sunday afternoon practices whether they are novices or pros, men or women. "It's a sport that lends itself to newcomers. And one-third of our membership is women." i ; The club practices each Sunday at noon on Ehringhaus field.', Tar Heels Footnotes: The 36th an nual Big Four Intramural Sports Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Wake Forest.
