2The Daily Tar HeelWednesday, November 9, 1983 defense From page 1 Aldermen council State do that (conduct business as usual) in the rubble. We'll do that in the mess," he said. Baker said that had the Senate been in session at the time of the explosion, there would have been "grave injury ... and perhaps, loss of life to senators and staff." The "Armed Resistance Unit," the group claiming responsibility for the bombing, said in a "communique" that "we attacked the U.S. government to retaliate against im perialist aggression that has sent the Marines, the CIA and the Army to invade sovereign nations...." TRIPOLI, Lebanon PLO chairman Yasser Arafat said Tuesday that "to avert a bloodbath" he will stop fighting Syrian-supported mutineers if the rebels halt their push into Tripoli, his last Middle East stronghold. "I will fight only in self-defense," the Palestine Liberation Organization leader told reporters after meeting with Tripoli's political and religious figures. They appealed for a cease-fire between Arafat loyalists and those who want to topple him. The right-wing christian Phalange radio reported that Arafat had left Tripoli by plane, but reporters saw the PLO leader in his Tripoli office several hours after the broadcast. Koole, an accountant and part owner of Martini's restaurant, said after the election that he was sorry he lost and that he was sorry for Carrboro. "I feel it's wrong that all the aldermen are ABC. 1 wish the issues would . have been more clear-cut," he said. Wilson, pastor of the St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Chapel Hill, agreed with Koole that it was not good for the town to be represented by one group. But he said he felt he had run the campaign with in tegrity and had addressed the issues. Foushee, formerly a CETA training counselor in Durham, could not be reached for comment. The vote totals for the three independent candidates were Wilson, 667; Koole, 606; and Foushee, 543. She added that the last three candidates were separated by a very slim margin. Less than 73 votes separated the last place finisher from the fourth. Voter turnout was unusually low in all of the local races, except in Hillsborough, where 54.2 percent of the registered voters went to the polls. Chapel Hill registered a 27.8 percent tur nout, followed by Carrboro, with 25.5 percent of the registered voters going to the polls. In the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education race, only 24.5 percent of those registered voted. Virginia Julian, registrar at the Fetzer Gym polling site, said voter turnout had been fair, considering that Fetzer was predominantly a student precinct. . , Julian said a majority of voters had been local residents rather than students. "Since most students are from other towns, I think they don't feel as closely kin to what happens in Chapel Hill," Julian aid. And contrary 10 the arguments of op ponents, he said, the existing stockpile of chemical weapons were neither leaking nor corroding, and were ready for use in retalia tion for any potential Soviet attack. :and: Nation Moreover, Pryor said U.S. allies in Western Europe, where chemical weapons would likely be used during wartime, had refused to store the new generation of binary nerve gas shells and bombs. Hatfield cited Pentagon testimony that the existing chemical stockpile was adequate to meet any Soviet attack. The Associated Press WASHINGTON FBI agents combed through a mound of debris Tuesday as the Senate attempted business as usual in the wake of a bomb blast that ripped through a hallway and severely damaged a meeting room near the chamber. Of ficials said the device was triggered by a wristwatch. "The Senate will not be deterred or intimidated," said Majority Leader Howard H. Baker Jr., R-Tenn., as he held the Senate to a schedule which began at 9 a.m. EST. "We'll mm iJMiiitHir i tliiiiats&m )TMu UgiT f j V s We Are Pleased to Announce That n Vinita Pasi, M.D. j Specializing in Obstetrics, Gynecology, Birth y -J- Control, Pregnancy Counseling, and well yj . health counseling, exercise, weight control and ft . . 9 stress control is now associated with Dr. William E.
