Thursday, July 19, 1984 DANCE From Page 1 Page 5B shadows that distorted the facial features of the dancers. Jampolis' color scheme of bluish whites and warm oranges were equally effec tive in creating mood, contrasting dancers and adding to the bizarre, unnatural images. The use of costumes, scrims masks, white make-up, and animal sound effects in "Return to Maria La Baja" further removed the dancers from humanity. Having proven in "Return to Maria La Baja" and "Day Two" that Pilobolus is capable of more than humorously satirizing tradi tional styles of dance, the dance troup's sense of humor returned for the curtain call as the dancers slid across the stage on a thin layer of water while the audience gave them a standing ovation. The Pilobolus Dance Theatre which has existed for 12 years was founded by Moses Pendleton and Jonathan Wolken as a dance troup consisting of four men, but now has expanded to five men and three women. Known for its originality and humor, the dancers in Pilobolus collaborate on the choreography of most of their pieces without the typical artistic director associated with most dance troups. The group takes its name from a genus of phototrpic funngi. The American Dance Festival directed by Charles L. Reinhart held its 50th anniversary at Duke University in Durham. The fes tival featured not only American modern dance artists but also 8 foriegn dance companies and 1 1 premieres. The American Dance Festival was founded by Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Cha rles Weidman and Hany Holm in Bennington, Vermont to recog nize and encourage modern dance. LOOKING FOR A HORSE?
