CENTRAL LABOR UNION LAST WEEK
WENT INTO HIGH GEAR-PRES.
SCOGGINS APPOINTS CONVENTS COM.
The meeting was opened with the
invocation by Brother W. S. Campbell,
with President Scoggins presiding,
and the minutes of the previous meet
ing were read and approved. The
Usual order of business followed with
reports by regular and special com
mittees, and roll cal lof officers, locals
and delegates. Outstanding was the
.report that construction begins Mon
day on the skating area, and that or
ganisation work is going on in the
fhemical industry, Western Union
and Penders bakers. The delegates
to the State Federation of Labor made
a fine worthwhile report of their ac
tivities in Durham, and, of course,
brought out the fact that they had
brought home the bacon, in bringing
the State Federation of Labor Conven
tion to Charlotte for 1941, the Second
Monday in August.
The opening of the negro housing
project was reported, a medal for the
C. C. L. U. that wil lexist for many
years to come. It was reported that
the Sheet Metal workers might affili
ate with the Central body in the near
future. The Building Trades are get
ting along in excellent shape with con
siderable work being finished, but
other work and contracts appearing
to keep up the building boom. The
Chauffeurs local is still growing, and
getting in better financial shape all
the time. The delegates were asked
to take back the news to their locals
that the Ruppert beer was still on the
“We do not patronize list,” and not
to drink Ruppert’s until further no
tice. The musicians reported art or
chestra out at the Parks and Recrea
tion Swimming Pool as requested. The
printing pressmen have signed con
tracts its was reported. The P. O.
Railway Mail laborers local reported
doubling their membership. The
Journeymen barbers reported plans
completed for a rousing Labor Day
meeting of their craft, in competition
with the meeting of the master bar
bers at the same time. Various cor
respondence was handled as usual. A
committee of one, Brother Jack Moore
was authorized to study the pamphlet,
Why Britain Fights, and report back.
Brother T. L. Funderburke was ap
pointed to the organization committee
instead of Brother McCrorie who is no
longer a delegate. The secretary was
asked to send a P C to those locals
sot represented at this meeting. A
Motion passed to appoint the steering
committe for the 1941 State A. F. of
, L. Convention. Wm. S. Greene was
made chairman, with the other mem
bers, T. L. Condor, H. P. Walker and
L>. L. Funderburke. The secretary
was instructed to write Durham A. F.
of L. thanking them for their nice re
ception at the Convention and offer
\o reciprocate. The meeting closed
with a few erudite remarks by Hon
orary Delegate, Wm. Witter, who has
returned to harness from a sick bed.
WM. S. GREENE, Sec’y.
Forty-Eight States
Enact Labor Day
Laws 1887 - 1923
FORTY-EIGHT STATES
Between 1887 and 1928 every one
of the forty-eight States, as well as
the territories, insular possessions and
the District of Columbia, enacted laws
making Labor Day a legal State hol
iday.
The first state law was enacted by
Oregon in 1887; the legislature desig
nated the first Saturday in June as
Labor Day, but later changed the
date to the first Monday in Septem
ber. Other states enacting similar
legislation in 1887 were Colorado,
Massachusetts, New Jersey and New
York. Wyoming completed the roll by
enacting a Labor Day law ih 1923.
In full battle kit, European troops
resemble creatures of Mars. Small
branches, twigs and leaves wired into
their steel helmets seem to be grow
ing out of the men’s very heads.

man’s son took long steps to save
shoe leather, but lost out in stretch
ing and ripping his pants.’’—Rays of
