THE COMMONWEALTH. j HfiPIn9 tfcefflood Bisect. Published Every Thursday BY J. C. HARDY, Editor and Proprietor. .Entered at the postofEce at Scotland Neck, N. C, a3 Second-Class Matter. Thursday, April 10, 1913. The city of Raleigh adopted the commission form of government at an election held April 1st, while on the same day Durham rejected the commission form of government. It ii given out on pretty good au thority that E. J. Justice, of Greens boro, will oppose Senator Lee S. Overman for re-election to the Sen ate when his present term expires. We have thought so for some time. Justice is not so rampant against trusts for nothing. Do you see? Willis L. Moore, chief of the weather bureau, has tendered his resignation and Secretary Houston has accepted the same to take effect June 31st. It is said that Mr. Moore expected to get an appointment in President Wilson's cabinet and fail ing to get this caused him to resign. Mr. Robert M. Phillips, associate editor of the Greensboro News, died at the home of his father, near Car thage, late Wednesday evening, April 2nd, after a short il!nes3 of heart failure. The death of this popular editor not only brought sad ness to his brethren of the press, but to many thousands of people "throughout North Carolina. Bob. Phillips was big hearted and carried sunshine wherever he went. It has been suggested, often times, and it strikes us as the best thing that can be done for our roads, and that is, instead of townships keeping a team and men employed all the time to drag the roads, that the roads be divided up, say in sections of five miles each, and let by con tract to the farmers living along these roads, and let each man look after his section and drag it at the proper time. This could be done at a great deal less cost than is paid now, and then all the roads would be dragged the same day or thereabout. The trouble in working under this system, we are told, is :n getting the farmers to take hole' (he work. How many farmers in Palmyra, Roseneath and Scotland Neck town ships are willing to undertake this work? What to do with the dust problem is giving our merchants and citizens generally right much concern. It does seem that we have had more dust the past ten days than ever be fore. On behalf of all the people of the town we beg'our city aldermen to stop and consider the matter long enough to see if something cannot be done to help the situation. We understand that there is an oil that can be used on dirt streets that will wonderfully improve the situation. Why not take up the matter and see what can be done? We are satisfied that the merchants of the town would be willing to pay a part of the cost of using this oil or what ever is necessary ' to help the dust situation and the town commission ers ought to put some money in this movement. We beg the commis sioners to take the lead in' this mat ter right away. It is their duty to do so, not only for the interest of the merchants who pay taxes, but in the interest of the health of the people of the town. All together then, gentlemen, and the dust situa tion can soon be greatly relieved. Lis! Takers. The following men have been named as tax libt takers for Halifax county: Butterwood W. T. Lifsey. Carswell's Liver-Aid Starts Lazy Livers Working in Fine Shape and Ends Constipation, Dizziness and Sick Headache or Money Back. Ask K. T. Whitehead Co. Changing the County Rome. The County Commissioners at their regular meeting Monnay, ap pointed a committee consisting of S. G. Whitfield, W. F. Horner, and J. E. Branch, to consider the advisa bility of selling the present county home farm and buying a smaller farm, and erecting a lot of brick buildings and equipping them with modern equipments etc. The present farm consists of some thing like 400 acres of fairly good land that they think ought to sell for seven or eight thousand dollars, or mere, and with thi3 amount the home can be made ready with but very little extra cost to the county. We believe this plan will meet with the approval of the tax payers of the county, especially so if they see the buildings and surroundings of our present home. As or.e of the commissioners expressed it, it is now a poor house, but I want to see a real modern county home for the care of our aged and infirm and un fortunates." And this is what it should be. You don't want calomel; you don't need it. It shocks the liver. It's like taking a heavy club to get ac tion from a horse when a gentle tap from a small whip would do the work better. You surely do need CARSWELL'S LIVER-AID because it not only puts action into your liver, but strengih, health and vigor into the whole body as well. It drives out the poisons from your system and does it quickly be cause it acts on liver, kidneys, bow els and stomach all at once. It is guaranteed to be a purely vegetable liquid remedy that will forever end the misery of constipa tion, sick headache, dizziness, ma laria and other common ailments without the distress of nausea or griping. . . Throw away calomel and get a generous Lottie of CARSWELL'S LIVER-AID today. It'd a grand remedy, harmless and pleasant to take and children take it as freely as grown-ups. If it doesn't bring joyful satisfaction your money back. 50c at E. T. Whitehead Company's. TuJ Kew Road Law. The recent legislature made some big changes in the Halifax county road law. AH the management of the roads was taken out of the hands of the county commissioners, and placed it with a board of seven men to be known ss-the highway commis sion and named the following men to serve a term of two years: G. C. Green, of Weldon; J. L. Patterson, of Roanoke Rapids; R. C. Dunn, of Enfield; F. P. Shields, of Scotland Neck; P. C. Gregory, of Tillery; Dr. J. H. Norman, of Essex; and C. D. House, of Thelma. These men expect to meet within the next week and organize. The law provides for the present system of the township unit. The law also provides for the holding of a bond election. We expect the plan of creating a highway commission will work well and cause the good roads question to take on new life. Oak City Item. Oak City, N. C, April 8.
