Jeffrey Ray Harrison, 51, was spotted in Windsor Saturday morning, where police made contact with him before he fled, leading officers on a near hour- long chase. Windsor Police Chief Jus tin Jackson said Officer Jessie Mizelle responded to a report Harrison was located between Duck Thru No. 21 and the Ber tie County ABC Store. “Officer Mizelle arrived and made contact with the suspect,” Chief Jackson said. “While he was asking for identification, another officer arrived and was walking toward the vehicle.” The chief said as Officer Den nis Smith approached the car, the suspect put his vehicle in drive and sped off towards the officer. “Fortunately, Officer Smith was able to move out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, but it See FUGITIVE, 5 quickly THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WIN DSOR - Three towns have already seen filing begin for the upcoming municipal elections. Would-be office hold ers in Kelford, Roxobel and Windsor have filled out candidate paper work since the filing pe riod opened Friday. In Kelford, a new comer has filed for the position of mayor. Ah mad Vaughan is seeking office for the first time, and filed for the posi tion currently held by longtime mayor Bailey Parker. Parker has not filed to date. Three incumbent Kel ford commissioners have filed for re-elec tion. They include John “Timmy” Eaton, Harvey Wayne Bland and James Harvey Bland Jr. In Roxobel, Mayor Gary Johnson has filed for re-election, as have three incumbent com missioners - David Lee Baisey Sr., Carolyn Bra- cy and Robert Phelps. Current commissioner Tim White has not filed to date. In Windsor, three peo ple have filed for three seats on the Windsor Board of Commission ers. Incumbent Camille Rascoe and Randy Walston have declared their intention to seek re-election. Fireworks lit up the sky over the Cashie River and the town of Windsor last week, celebrating America’s independence. The Freedom Fireworks were held Wednesday, July 3 at the Ro anoke Cashie River Center. The gates opened at 5 p.m. for spectators, with vendors, enter tainment and more. Rain showers early on did not stop spectators from arriving to find the best seat for the show. VBH hosts camps LESLIE BEACHBDARD Bertie Ledger-Advance * WINDSOR - Five local students learned about healthcare careers dur-i ing camps. ! Vidant Bertie Hospi-i tal, in collaboration with' Bertie High School, Ber tie Early College High School, John A. Holmes High School and Vidant Chowan Hospital host ed their annual Health Careers Boot Camps. The events were open to rising junior and se nior students of the schools who have an in terest in a future career in healthcare. The camps were de signed to heighten the students’ awareness of the healthcare in dustry, and to provide them with a variety of experiences in hospital and primary practice settings. The opportu nity also aided the stu dents in determining the classes they need to take in preparation for their college education and other enrichment programming. Students participat ed in shadowing rota tions throughout the campuses of both hos pitals, and they were given time to talk with healthcare profession als about their careers and how they reached their career goals. The camps were con ducted June 17-20.
