HIGHLANDS SKATERS FROM FOUR COLLEGES For the third consecutive week- end ice skating has been enjoyed on the Highlands lakes. Last Sun day saw at one time more than two hundred skaters on Mirror Lake, which seems to be the prin cipal skating center. In addition to skaters, from nearby towns, the colleges and universities repre sented were Clemsori college, Fur man university, Greenville, S. C. University of Georgia, Athens, and Louisiana State university. High lands skaters have also enjoyed th sport to the fullest. NORTON-HOPPER Announcement has been' made of .the marriage of Miss Bertha Norton to Fred J. Hopper. The ceremony took place at Clayton, Ga., at 4 o'clock in the afternoon a, ' of Saturday, February IS. For the ceremony the bride wore a tailor ed suit of navy blue wool, with matching accessories. Mrs. Hopper is the daughter of Mrs. Hattie Norton of Dillard, Ga., rid the lafe Fred Norton. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Hopper of Highlands. For the present the couple will make their home with Mr. Hop ' :tk per's parents on the Dillard road. MRS. GILBERT ENTERTAINS CLUB Mrs. E. R. Gilbert entertained the Wednesday Card Club at three tables of contract last week. The -..'.' living room decorations were fory sythia and English Ivy. Mrs. Wil ton H. Cobb won high score prize and Mrs. O. E. Young was final winner of the traveling' prize. Mrs. Tudor N. Hall and Mrs. Thomas C. GOOD FOOD IS GOOD Highlights G. STORY LAST RITES FOR MRS. B. F. WALDROUP Funeral services were held at Andrews last Friday for Mrs. 13. F. Waldroup, who was in her 70th year. Mrs. Waldroup was a sister of the late Mrs. J. P. McKinney of Highlands ami an aunt of Mrs. Frank H. Potts. She also had a number of other nieces and neph ews here. She was born in -V aeon county September . 2, 1871, and joined the Methodist church at the age of 13 years. Surviving Mrs. Waldroup are her husband and eight children, Mr. Sidney Piercy, Mrs. J. B. Mathe son, Mrs. Elsie Taylor, Miss Ruth Waldroup, Frank , and Walter Wal droup, all of Andrews; Mrs. J. S. Watkins, Concord, Tenn., and Joe T. Waldroup, Bremerton, Wash. One sister, Mrs. Ula Grant of Lake Helen, Fla., also survives. Rev. J. S. Higgins will attend the annual zone meeting of Methodist ministers, which will be held in Franklin on Monday, March 3, to discuss plans for the Mission In stitute. . Woods, Jr., left Mon day for their home in Pinehurst, Ga., after a week's visit with the latter's sister and brother-in-law, Mr! and Mrs. Louis A. Edwards. Miss Elizabeth Swain, of Anniston, Ala., another .sister, . has arrived for a short visit with Mr. and Mrs. Edwards. Miss Swain is con nected with the War Department and has recently been transferred from Washington, D. C, to Fort McClelland. Mr. and' Mrs. Charles F. Redden, Sr., who are visiting their daugh ter, Mrs. W. B. Famsworth, and family' in Atlanta, expect to return to their home "Meadowhill' this week-end. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Wilson a daughter, on Sunday, February. 23, at their home in the Clear Creek section. Mr. and Mrs. George Moore and children who have been spending the winter here, will leave this week-end for their home in Denver, Col. Mr. Moore is a member of the office staff of the Morrison Knudsen company on the Glenv ille clam project. The Moores have made many friends here who re gret their departure. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Burgess at their home on Spring street the past week-end were Mr Burgess' mother and sister, Mrs. C. T. Burgess and Miss Blondine Burgess of Seneca, S. C., and a sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Sartairt of Bowman, Ga. Hubert Wilson and Herman Wilson, who spent the week-end with their families, have returned to Fort Bragg -"where they have been employed for some time. Mr. and Mrs., Frank B. Cook, Mr: and Mrs. Wilton H. Cobb and Miss Sara Gilder attended a matinee showing of "The Little Foxes", starring Tallulah Bank head, at the. Plaza theatre in Ashe ville last Saturday. Marett have purchased a winter home on Bay Vista avenue in Sarasota, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Marett have spent the winter months in Sarasota for the past 10 or 12 years. James McConncll, son of G. R. McConnell of the Shortoff section, enlisted in the United States Navy on February 11 and is stationed "somewhere in Virginia." Tom Crunkleton has enlisted in the U. S. Army and left Sunday for his post of duty. Mrs. J. S. Higgins, Mrs. Annie Westbrook. Miss Fannie G. Lucas and Miss Susan Rice spent Mon day in Franklin on a combination business and shopping trip. W. H. Rogers, who has been staying with his aunt, Miss Nannie Rogers ' was called to the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Tilson, in the Walnut Creek section last Satur day because of the serious illness of Mr. Tilson. This tour is conducted annually for the purpose of better acquaintance and cooperation between. Mayors of Western North Carolina, and to study first hand the plans and programs of the Florida cities in their advertising: for and enter taining of . winter visitors, as well as to extend a personal invitation. to the Florida tourists and . regu lar citizens to visit Western North Carolina. . Mayor Edwards reports that a royal welcome was .extended to them in' all cities visited, and that upon entering each' city they were met by a motorcade and escorted through, to the abandonment of all traffic rules. According to Mayor Edwards only the best of every thing was good enough for our Carolina Mayors. Eighteen radio stations donated time for broad casts, and our Mayor made a few minutes, broadcast from WCOS, Columbia, S. C. "Every moment was planned for the entertainment of the mayors from 5 :30 in the mornings when Jim Coad rapped on our doors, until late night hours,' Mayor Ed wards stated.
