McKinney, 84, Passes Saturday Funeral services for Zebulon Vance McKinney, 84, were held at the Highlands Methodist church Sunday afternoon at j one o'clock by the pastor, Rev. W. T, Medlin, Jr. Burial was in I the Miller cemetery. Pallbearers were George Cleaveland, Don Watson, Jeter 1 Buchanan. Frank Cabe, Harley Smith and Edgar McCall. Survivors include his widow, two sons, Mack McKinney with the army in Italy, .and Wade McKinijey of Highlands; two daughters, Mrs. Aylor Chastain of Highlahds and Mrs. Ella Sherrod of Staatsburg, N. Y.; one sister, Mrs. Carolyn Cabe of Highlands, five grandchil dren and one great-grandchild. Mr. McKinney was a member of the Cashiers Valley Baptist church. T 5 Edwards Commended In German Push-Back T/5 Ralph Bruce Edwards is a member of the service group commanded by Lieutenant Col onel James M. Sullivan that was commended for its part in the air-ground push that drove the German armies from North ern France. This group is re sponsible for all the supply and major repair to the ninth air force P-51 Mustang group that recently received the Presiden tial Citation. Miss Richardson Passes In Brevard News of the death of Miss Bessie M. Richardson on Febru ary 13 at the Pierce-Moore ho tel in Brevard, came as a shock to her Highlands friends. Miss Richardson and Miss Gertrude Swanson built 'Grey rock", their lovely summer home on Bearpen Mountain a few years ago and had become a part of the village life. They usually spent their winters in Mexico, but because of travel conditions, decided on Brevard this winter. MLss Richardson was a grad uate nurse and was connected for many years with welfare work in Tulsa, Okla., from which she retired about six years ago. She was a member of the Episcopal church. Funer al services and interment were in Bel Air, Md., her former home. "Boy Scout" Topic Used By The Rev. Morgan Following the monthly sup per of the Episcopal church congregation Thursday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Davis, the Rev. A. Rufus Morgan told briefly of the plans for organizing a Boy Scout Troop in Highlands that he had outlined before a meet ing of business men in the town hall that afternoon. Mr. Morgan said the churches here were being asked to act as sponsors for the movement and that an advisory commit tee would be appointed from the membership of the four churches, this committee in turn to appoint a scoutmaster. In this connection, the name of Rev. W. T. Medlin, Jr., pas tor of Highlands Methodist church, was mentioned. Other matters of interest to the church were also discussed at the supper meeting. The delicious spaghetti sup per was served by Mrs. Davis and Miss Caroline Hall under the auspices of the woman's auxiliary. The new committee for planning the monthly sup pers includes Mrs. E. R. Gil bert, Mrs. Tom Harbisor) and Mrs. W. S. Davis. MRS. SUMMER PRESIDENT OF WOMEN'S AUXILIARY Mrs. O. F. Summer was elected president of the wom en's auxiliary of the Presbyter ian church at the February meeting held at the home of Mrs. H. P. Thompson. Mrs. W. H. Cobb had charge of the program on Foreign Missions and a special offering was taken. Other officers for the year are Mrs. Sidney McCarty, vice president; Miss Dorothea Har bison. secretary and Miss Ruth Carter, treasurer. Miss Dorothea Harbison also continues her work as historian. Mrs. H. P. Thompson was elected pastor's aid. Secretaries of the various causes elected at the meeting were, Mrs. W. H. Cobb, Foreign Missions; Miss Ruth Carter, Assembly's Home Missions; Miss June Thompson, Christian ed ucation and ministerial relief; Mrs. C. J. Anderson, religious education, and social activities: Mrs. W. C. Newton, Synod's and Presbytery's home missions; Mrs. Sidney McCarty, spiritual life; Mrs. W. W. Edwards, christian social service and Miss Ruth Carter, literature. Corporal Edwards is a radio operator in a ninth air force service command signal com pany. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Edwards Of Horse Cove Valley. Highlands. The Public Relations Office has sent a copy of the story in its entirety to the parents of Corporal Edwards to keep as a memento. TheBestPartof theTDcal IW< SPECIAL COFFEE Methodist To Observe Layman's Day Feb. 25 The Highlands Methodist church will observe Layman's Day Sunday, February 25, ac cording to an announcement by the pastor, Rev. W. T. Meldin, Jr. Laymen at the Highlands church who will participate in the program include Prof. W. C. Newton, W. S. Davis, Miss Sally Stevens, R. J. Price, Wade Sut ton, Dr. Jessie Zachary More land. and Miss Marian Lester. Mr. Medlin said the last General Conference of the Methodist Church gave official approval to "Laymen's Day" in the following language: "To further the work of Lay Ac tivities, the fourth Sunday in February of each year shall be designated as Laymen's Day, the program to be under the direction of the Board. This is a clear recognition of the val ue of Laymen's Day for the presentation from year to year of some outstanding phase of the program of 'lay activities; and also for giving to the lay men of the church an opportu nity to bear witness to their' faith and experience." The theme for 1945 is "The Church Meeting Its Responsi- , bility: For Ministerial Supply; I to the Homeland; To the Wo^ld". This subject, as will immediately be apparent, is re lated definitely to the Crusade for Christ, Mr. Medlin said. Personal Mention Corporal Herman Norton of Newfoundland is spending a furlough here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Norton. Cpl. Norton's sister, Miss Leona Norton- of Mission Hospital, Asheville, was at home for the weekend. Corporal and Mrs, James E. Crane of Marfa, Texas, and Private First Class Thad Crane have been, visiting their mother, Mrs. Ed Crane. This is the first time the two brothers have been together in three years. On his visit here, Pfc. Thad Crane had .as his guest Pfc. Marion Humphreys of Moore General Hospital in Asheville. Another guest at the Crane home was Miss Rena Goff, ol Blaney, S. C., sister of Mrs. Fred Crane. Postmaster and Mrs. C. C. Potts accompanied their son. Sergeant Edward Potts, to Mi ami, Fla., Thursday following his furlough here after three years of overseas duty. Mr. and Mrs. Potts expect to be away until about the first of March. Pvt. and Mrs. Sammuel P. Tallent and small son were re cent weekend guests of Pvt. Tallent's sister and brother-in law, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Cul bertson. Pvt. Tallent has been recuperating in a hospital in Jackson, Miss., from wounds re ceived in Germany. Other guests of Mr. and Mrs. Culbert son at the time were Mr. and Mrs. John P. Strother and son, of Concord, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hicks re cently returned from a ten day trip to Miami, Fla., where Mr. Hicks went on business for Turner Dorris, of Miami and ! Highlands. Mrs. J. H. Sherrod of Staats burg, N. Y., who was called home for the funeral of her father, Zebulon Vance McKin- i ney on Sunday, is spending this week in New York City and are registered at Hotel Bristol. Mr. and Mrs. Zahner's daughter, Mrs. L. L. Ager, is al so in New York where she is visiting Seaman First Class Ager's parents. Mrs. John C. Henley, Jr., of Birmingham, Ala., and High lands, is spending some time at Fort Sill, Okla., the guest of her son and daughter-in-law, Lt. and Mrs. John C. Hanley, III. Mrs. A. L. Westbrook is the guest of Mrs. Mary Zachary at the Potts House while Mr. and Mrs. Potts are spending two weeks in Florida.
