Central Carolina Telephone Company Ever since 1890, when Southern Pines first began to become popular as a resort area, its transportation facilities have been one of the prin cipal factors for its rapid growth and, eventually, for the national pres tige it enjoys today as the Mid-South resort of winter vacationists. Of late years state and government road building programs have increas ed automobile travel into the area a hundred fold, and Southern Pines’ lo cation squarely on U. S. Highway No. 1 within an easy day’s driving distance of Washington, D. C., on the north, and Atlanta, Ga., and Co. lumbia, S. C., on the south, has been responsible to a large degree for its immense popularity with south-bound and north-bound tourists and vaca tionists. Of late years, too, tremen dous strides in aviation and increas- eded facilities of the airline com panies, along with the establishment at Knollwood of a modern airport, have added immeasurably to the accessi bility of the area. But at the bottom of it all, and primarily responsible for Southern Pines position in the report world today, is the railroad— the Seaboard Air Line. First Stopped Here in ’83 In 1883, when the Seaboard first stopped its trains at Southern Pines, it was little more than a wide place ■n the road, and the idea of Southern Pines as a resort area was little more than a dream. By 1893, however, the idea had grown and railroad travel to Southern Pines during th^ winter and spring months has increased to the point where, at the insistance of all those concerned, special cars and trains from Philadelphia, New York and Washington were added to the schedule to accommodate the traffic. From that small beginning has ^rown Seaboard service to Southeni Pines that now provides over-night train service from Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, on the north; Detroit. Pittsburgh, and Cleveland, to the west, and the ex treme Florida pvoints, to the south. With five trains a day each way through Southern Pines, six of them carrying de-luxe equipment and three I with special cars for Southern Pines, this resort has become a major point on the Seaboard, second only to the more numerous and populous Florida resorts served by the "Orange Blossom Express,” for which runs the Sea. board has recently purchased three of the largest and mightiest locomo tives in the world, 6,000 horsepower Diesel electric units with overall lengths of 210 feet, and with which it will inaugurate the first all-elec tric service from New York to the, Southeast this winter. Arrangements have also been made to purchase a I new, seven-car, streamlined, stainless .eteel, all chair-car train with dining car, powered with a 2,000 horse-pow- ^ er Diesel electric engine to operate on the same run, probably starting early; in February. | Train Schedule | The northbound and southbound ! schedules through Southern Pines this !
