Man Is Crushed
In Accident South
Of Town Friday
A ycung McBee, S. C. Negro,
crouched down between two cars
changing a tire, was crushed and
narrowly averted death Friday
night about 6:45 in one of the
most gruesome highway acci
dents ever recorded in this coun
ty.
The victim, Malcolm L. Blake
ly, 21, suffered a punctured blad
der, a broken pelvic bone and
had both legs crushed when Har-1
ry Klabbatz, of Southern Pines,'
ran into the rear of a car parked
just in front of Brooks Open Air
Market on Highway 1 South of
Southern Pines.
Patrolman H. A. Hight, who in
vestigated, said that Blakely was
going from Durham to his home
in South Carolina. Another car,
carrying a friend, wgs immedi
ately behind him.
Blakely, the patrolman said,
had a blowout and both cars
stopped in front of the market.
Blakely was down between the
cars getting ready to repair the
tire when a 1955 Ford truck driv
en by Klabbatz rammed into the
rear car.
Klabbatz told the officer he

Blakely was reported in criti
