Nelson of Rob bins was a guest of the Lions Club last week. After a delicious dinner of barbecued chicken top ped off with cherry pie, served by the 10th grade of the school | directed by Idrs. Parish, the club adjourned to the Presbyte rian Church to participate in the worship services which were held there each evening last week with the Rev. Mr. Nelson bring ing the messages. Youth Revival The young people of the chtirches of this area are spon soring a youth revival beginning Monday evening, April 1, at 7:30 at the Presbyterain Church. The Rev. Stuart Ritchie, pas tor of the Troy Presbyterian Church, will be the speaker each evening through Friday, April 5. He will discuss problems vital to teen-agers. Mrs. W. A. Johnson, Jr., will direct the singing, ac companied by Dorothy Leigh VonCanon. The recreation each evening will be in charge of Mrs. George Houck. This is the third year these young people have sponsored a levival and they extend a hearty welcome tb the youth in this area. Joe Eifort is chairman of arrangements. Cole Lad Susies Bums Michael Cole, lO-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Cole, was severely burned last Friday and i<? a patient at Moore County Hospital. The accident happened about 6 o’clock while the Coles were burning some trash. A can of paint thinner is thought to have been with the trash which exploded and caused bad facial burns on Mike. Injured In Accident Patricia Farmer was injured in an auto accident in Gastonia early last week and is a patient in the hospitaP there. Her father, Archie Farmer, and her p^tor, the Rev. George Houck, visited her last Wednesday. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Farmer were din ner guests of the Robinsons in Gastonia and visited their daugh ter, who is recuperating nicely. Ave. Across from A&P Store SOUTHERN PINES Poole, Paul VonCanon and Clyde Auman attended a meeting in Raleigh on Tuesday in behalf of increase in salaries for teachers. Raleigh Tour Forty high school students from West End School, accom panied by Miss Bert McCrum- men, the Senior advisor, toured many interesting places in Ra leigh Wednesday and were guests of both houses of the Legislature. The tour included the gas cham- ^ ber, the museum, the Governor’s' Mansion, the Hall of History, the North Carolina School for the Blind and the News and Observ er. The most educational and in teresting feature of the day was the tour of the capitol where the students were greeted by Gover nor Luther H. Hodges. Botlj. houses of the Legislature were, visifed. In the Senate the group was recognized by Senator Jor dan of Hoke. Hon. Claude Currie of Durham, president pro tern, extended special courtesies to the students and honored his bousin, Martha Currie, by making her pagette of the Senate fqr the day. From the Senate the group went to the House. Representa tive H. Clifton Blue came to the gallery to greet personally his Moore County boys and girls. Later from the floor of the House Mr. Blue recognized the West Enil School and extended to them the courtesies of the floor. Tbe tour was planned and sponsored by the Civics, History and Sociology classes. They in elude Martha Currie, Merle Fletcher, Esther Martin, Mary i Pusser, Maxine Jenkins, Bob Carter, Joe Eifort, Donald Porter, Watts Auman, Carolyn Williams,] Hilda Richardson, Hilda Chis holm, Joyce Martin, Edna Mon roe, Karen Farmer, Jimmy Blakely, Jean Hannah, Jerry Dunn, Linda Munn, Cassie Gib son, Hilda Laton, Willie Jane King, Dot Furr, Lois Godfrey, Mary Kellis, Clifton Munn, Eliz abeth Thomas, Patsy Clark, Dot VonCannon, Bobby Auman, Eu gene Blak^, Louise Baughn, Patsy McDonald, Sarah Bost, Jean Barnette, Clement Richard son, Libby Britt, Jane Hartsell, Evelyn Thomas. School Events In chapel Friday morning Mr. Sinclair read a citation, honoring Charles Brewer, a 1955 graduate of West End School, from the Naval Military Training Station at the Great Lakes. Charles was commended for his good work, efficient leadership, and whole some character. A Naval Military annual from the school was pre sented as a gift to Charles to be placed in the West End Library. The annual was received by Mrs. W. M. Thompson, librarian. Carolyn Branson, president of the West End Chapter of the Beta Club, presented to Mr. Sin clair, a check for $81.61 for the last payment on the stage cur tains. This is the conclusion of a three-year project undertaken by the club in 1954. The seniors received their an nuals last week and in chapel Friday Editor-in-Chief Carolyn Branson read the dedication which was to Mrs. Martha Par rish, the commercial teacher, and is as follows; < “We, the Senior Class of 1957, wish to express our thanks to one who has shown great interest in us and has very graciously as sisted us in many of our activi ties. We appreciate her encour aging us to do better work and her devotion to her duties in the schooL This, the 1957 Pine Burr, is sincerely dedicated to Mrs. Martin Parrish.” | Merle Fletcher read the last will and testament of the Senior Class of 1957 from the new an nual. Joe Eifort, business mana ger, and Carolyn Branson issued the annuals to those who had purchased them. The padded cov er is very attractive, done in two- toned green, all pictures are very clear throughout the book and the Seniors are to be compli mented for their excellent taste and artistic work. Personals Daniel Patterson, Jr., and Chris McDonald were at home last weekend from N. C. State College, Raleigh. Elsie Hill is here for Spring vacation from Loxiis- burg College. Mrs. John Thompson is im proving nicely at her home. (Her mother, Mrs. Wilhoit, (rf Carth age is with her and Miss Emily Thompson of Charlotte is spend ing this week with her. Miss Blanche McKinnon of Samarcand Manor spent last weekend with her cousin, Mrs, E. R. Outland. Sunday guests of Mrs. Outland were Mrs. J. W. Thomas and Mrs. John Hender son of the White Hill communi ty. ON HONORS LIST Thomas Temple Grey of Southern Pines has been named one of thirty students at East Carolina College in Greenville to the “all-l’s” classification of honor students, the highest pos sible marks in all classes in which a student was enrolled during the winter quarter. Exports of tobacco are expect ed to remain fairly high in the near future.
