Mr. and Mrs. Ray have an at tractive home in Dogwood Acres, where Mr. Ray has a large bulb garden with a gorgeous array of spring flowers. After a tour through the gar den, Mrs. Ray served the guests Russian tea and sandwiches. Mr. Ray, a retired pharmacist, is a native of Carthage and a for mer employee of the Moore County News. Music Club Meets The Carthage Music Club met Friday night with Mrs. M. J. Mc- PhaU as hostess at her home on Barrett Street. The president, Mrs. M. T. Stew art, presided and Mrs. John Cline, chaplain, opened the meet- ' ing with prayer. After a short busines session, a program on “Spirituals” was presented. Mrs. C. G. Spencer gave a research paper on Spirit uals, and Mrs. C. A. Kennedy pilayed “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child.” Mrs. Laveme Womack sang “Sweet Little Jesus Boy,” and Mrs. Colin Spencer, Jr., presented a piano solo, “Deep River.” During the social period the hostess served sandwiches and cake. Surprise Kitchen Shower Circles one. and two of the Car thage Presbyterian Church gave a kitchen shower Friday night at the home of Miss Janie McLeod, honoring Miss Florence Gray, re cently retired teacher in the Home Mission School in Blackey, Ky., who has come to make her home in Carthage, having pur chased a house on Morgan Street. She was presented a large bas ket Of gifts—-preserved fruits, pickles, linens and kitchen ware. The Circle chairmen, Mrs. Charles J. McDonald and Mrs. Harold Parker, served delicious refreshments, consisting of rib bon ice cream and individual decorated cakes with coffee. Stephen Ernest Freed The Rev. and Mrs. Paul Freed of Greensboro announce the birth of a son, Stephen Ernest, on March 1 in Wesley Long Hospi tal, Greensboro. Mrs. Freed is the former Bettv Jane Seawell of Carthage. Their other children are Paul, seven, Donna, five, and James, three years old. Baptist Circle The Carol Humphrey Circle of the Carthage Baptist Church, with Mrs. Alex Caddell as chair man, remembered the four children in the boarding home last week with a generous basket of fruits, candy, and other little gifts. , , Mrs. Oma Blanchard has charge of the Home. Dinner Party Mrs. T. N. Frye entertained at a dinner party Saturday night at her home on Pinehurst Road. The guest list included Mrs. Walter Zahniser, Mrs. Edwin Smith and Mrs. A. L. Isley of the Mclver School faculty in Sanford, Mrs. C. C. Kennedy, Mrs. W. R. Clegg, Miss Frances McKeithen and Miss Meade Seawell, of Carthage. Jane Tyson Hunt „ , . Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Hunt of High Point are the parents of a daughter, Jane Tyson, born Wed nesday, March 20, in the I^h Point Memorial Hospital. The baby weighed seven pounds and eight ounces. Mrs. Hunt is the former Jane Tyson of Carthage. Little Jane Tyson Hunt is the first grandchild of Mrs. Lucien P. Tyson. Personals The Rev. and Mrs. Charlie Worth and children, Lucy, and Charlie, Jr., of WhiteviUe and Mrs. Robert Gavin and chil dren, Edwin, Grace Blue ^d John, of Sanford spent Monday with their mother, Mrs. Jame M. CaddeU spent Sunday in Fayetteville, v/ith their son-in-law and daugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Glass. Mrs. R. A. Humphries and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Humphries of Gaffney, S. C., were weekend guests of the Rev. and Mrs. C. A Kirby at the Baptist parsonage. Mr. and Mrs. WiUiam Kennedy of the Bethlehem Church section have moved into the four-room cottage belonging to Ed Comer, on Rockingham Street. Mr. Ken nedy is manager of the Sinclair Oil station on Pinehurst Drive. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott Patterson of West End are new residents in Carthage. At present they are liv ing in their trailer while making ready their new house. Mr. Pat- tcrsbn is employed with Sinclair Furniture Store. ' Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Brafford and daughter, Mary Lynn, of Elon College, were recent guests of Mrs. W. L. McLean. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Neely and son, Andy, of WhiteviUe were guests of his aunt, Mrs. W. G. CaldweU, over the weekend. Mrs. Oscar Shoenfelt and chil dren left Friday for their home in Shrub Oak, N. Y., after a two- weeks’ visit to her pcirents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Currie. Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Roper and children, Billy, Jane and Gowen, of PhUadelphia, Pa., are spend ing this week with Mrs. Roper’s mother, Mrs. Alonzo Blue. Guests of Mrs. W. G. Caldwell last weekend were her sisters, Mrs. W. F. Stevenson of Cheraw, S. C., Mrs. E. C. Neely and daughter. Miss Florence Neely, of Charlotte, and Mrs. N. F. Hall of Salisbury. Mrs. Caldwell ac companied Mrs. Neely home to Charlotte,. returning Friday night. Supt. of Schools H. Lee Thomas was in Wilmington Fri day and Saterday attending the State NCEA meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McGraw and chUdren of Whrwick, Va., spent the weekend with their pa rents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. McGraw and Mr. and Mrs. H. Lee Thomas. Mrs. W. G. Benner and son, Penn, Mrs. U. L. Barrett and Mrs. J. K. Roberts went to Wil mington Friday to visit relatives and attend the Azalea Festival over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Barnes have returned home from a three months’ stay in Ft. Myers, Fla. They had as their supper guests Sunday night Mr. and Mrs. Bill Barnes and daughter of Lilling- ton, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Barnes and son of Southern Pines and Mr. and Mrs. John Barnes and son of Greensboro. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Osborne came down from Badin Sunday to be with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ward, after the death of Mr. Ward's mother, iMrs. Margaret Ward. Mrs. John S. Leach of Wilson spent the weekend with Mrs. El don Adams. Misses Bess and Myrtle Mc- Caskill, Mr. and Mrs. H. Lee Thomas, Mrs. Holt McNeill, T. Roy Phillips, and Mr. and Mrs. John M. Currie attended the an nual alumni banquet at Farm Life School Saturday night. Mrs. Beulah PhUUps is receiv ing treatment in Memorial Hospi tal at Chapel HiU. Bobby Hugh and Tommy Mc- Caskill and Dohn Davis, students at Wingate CoUege, spent the weekend here with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. John Kiker and children returned to their home in Dayton, Ohio, Saturday after spending two weeks with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Mc Donald, and Mr. and Mrs. Kiker in Wadesboro. Mr. and Mrs. John Patterson of West End were Saturday vis itors of their son and daughter- in law, Mr. and Mrs. Elliot Pat terson. The drive, not quite as success ful this year as last, was never theless “extremely good,” Mrs. R. M. McMillan, chairman, said. “We are most grateful for the response shown to this most worthy project and I’m sure we’re all better off for having responded to the slo gan—^Have a heart, help a heart,” she said.
