EHRMAN PICKLER Baptist Cizcles Meet Mrs. John Morgan was hostess to the Margaret Holder Circle of, the Baptist Church Monday eve ning at 7:30. “Effective Prayer” was the topic Mrs. Luther Tyner used for the program. At the close of the meeting the hostess served pound cake, salted nuts, mints and tea to the six members present. The Carmen Adams Circle met Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Charles McMaster with five members and two visitors present. Mrs. Lacy Sessoms was in charge of the program “Practical Primer On Prayer.” Following the busi ness presided over by the chair man, Mrs. McMaster, refresh ments! were served. The Ida Combs Circle met at the home of Mrs. G. F. Moss Mon day evening with ten members answering roll call. Mrs. Brady Brooks, chairman, presided and presented the program. The host ess served sandwiches, cookies and punch. WSCS Meets The Woman’s Society of Chris tian Service of the Methodist Church met Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock at the church with 16 members present. Assisting Mrs. Clay Parker in presenting the program were Mrs. Vernon Davis , and Mrs. Lewis . Marts. Mrs. Douglas Morgan and Mrs. Hurley Short were hostesses for the eve ning. Personals Miss Diana David is attending the Southeastern Methodist Youth Fellowship workshop at Lake Junaluska for a week. Tommy Bryant left Saturday for De Leon Springs, Fla., where he will spend the remainder of the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Val Elsesser at? tended a birthday dinner for June High at Mt. Vernon Church, near Wadesboro, Sunday. Miss Jeanette Van Boskerck of Watts Hospital, Durham, is spending her vacation with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Van Boskerck. M. B. Edwards and daughter Judy and J. B. Edwards, of Char lotte,, were guests Sunday of their sister, Mrs. J. D. Mangum, and Mr. Mangum and Mrs. Ethel Ed wards. Paula Edwards returned home with them after a two-week visit with the Mangums and Mrs. Edwards. Sgt. and Mrs. Charles Comer and children of Jacksonville were weekend guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.| Claude Jester. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lampley and daughter Earlene are spending the week at Windy Point. Mr. and Mrs. Wesley McMurray and daughters, Kathy and Debbie, visite;<? Mr. and Mrs. John Sturm at Randleman over the weekend. Mrs. Junior Merritt of Lees burg, Fla., and Tebe Ste^srart of Laurinburg were gueste Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McMas ter. Mr. and Mrs. Abram Van Bos- kerck and children, Miss Joan Van Boskerck and James, have returned home after a two weeks vacation spent with relatives in New Jersey and other points, While away they visited Mr. Van Boskerck’s niece, Mrs. Frank Brown, and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Van Boskerck. They also visited Niagara FaUs. On their return home they stopped over in Cum berland, Md., for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Ward Jamison. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stedman and daughter, Janice, of Fayetteville, were dinner guests Saturday of Mr. and Mrs. Lacy Sessoms and Mrs. Lang Hale. Mrs. Hale re turned home with them for visit. Billie and Bonnie Bryant are spending the week in Charlotte spending the week in Charleston with Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Stephens, Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Richards and son, Danny, of Addis Ababa, Ethi opia, were guests last week of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Troutman. Mr. and Mrs. James Boone and sons, Frankie and Dannie, of Ral eigh visited Mrs. Boone’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Adams, over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Street Morgan and sons. Dale emd Michael, of Asheboro were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Morgan. Mrs. Harmon Strange of Man ning is spending the week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Buchanan. Gerald Foushee returned to his home in Durham Tuesday after visiting his cousin, Lester McCas- kill. Mrs. Bill Walters is spending two weeks in Alabama, ( visiting relatives. Bobby Morgan is spending some time in Elizabeth City with his sister, Mrs. Richard Peele, and Mr. Peele. Birthday Party Mrs. M. C. Pickier entertained at the Home Demonstration Club house on Thursday honoring her daughter, Arlene, who was cele brating her 13th birthday. Games were played and dancing enjoyed throughout the evening. Arlene received many nice and useful gifts from the 12 guests present. ; Cake and ice cream were serv ed. George Melton of Jonesboro Heights, Sanford, visited his sis ter, Mrs. J. R. Lampley, Sunday. Final Rites Are Held Tuesday Fof^ Mrs. Schmidt Funeral services for Mrs. Ame lia Meyer Schmidt, 80, resident of Southern Pines for 44 years, were held Tuesday at the Church of Wide Fellowship. Mrs. Schmidt died suddenly Saturday afternoon at her home on North Ashe Street. Rev. Carl E. Wallace officiated at the serv ices, assisted by Dr. C. K. Ligon. Burial was in Mt. Hope Ceme tery- Pallbearers were M. Y. Poe, Frank Kaylor, D. E. Bailey, Bob Cameron, Yates Poe and J. T. Overton. Mrs. Schmidt was born June 28, 1877, in Buffalo, New York. In 1901 she married William Schmidt and for several years lived in Staten Island. Mr. Schmidt died there in 1911. In 1913 Mrs. Schmidt and her daughter Goldie came to Southern Pines. Quiet and unassuming during her long life in this community, Mrs. Schmidt—Big Ma to aU who knew her—leaves a host of friends who mourn her passing. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. William E. Crain; three granddaughters, Louise Crain, Pauline Crain, and Mrs. Alex (Mary) Morgan; one great grand son, ' Richard Morgan, all of Southern Pines; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Louise M. Fish of Coopers- town. New York; two nieces. Miss Marie L. Meyer and Mrs. Joseph W. Dawson, both of Buffalo. Miss j Meyer and Mrs. Dawson are! daughters of the late John H. Meyer who spent several winters here with his sister, Mrs. Schmidt. Two cousins, Mrs. Ethel Beard and Mrs. Bette Culver of Buffalo, also survive. Samarcand Water Plant Is Being Rehabilitated Rehabilitation of the water treatment plant at Samarcand, a correctional institution for girls at Eagle Springs, has been start ed by the Potts-Brown Company of Charlptte. The project will cost $36,83'!, a company spokes man said, and involves cleaning up the existing plant. Four men wiU be employed on the project with two additional laborers to be hired during the; course of the project. The company was awarded the contract for the water treatment plant rehabilitation June 26. When completed, about Decem ber 1, the plant will have a ca pacity of 750,000 gallons. Requiem Mass Is Sung Monday For Miss Helen Reed Miss Helen Marie Reed, who with her brother, Arthur C. Reed, operated the Belvedere Hotel here for. 10 years prior to 1956, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital Friday. R osary service was held for her at Powell Funeral Chapel Sun day and Requiem Mass was sung Monday morning at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church by the Rev. Francis A. McCarthy, pastor. Burial followed in Mount Hope cemetery. Miss Reed was a native of Springfield, Mo., but had lived in St. Louis and Chicago before mov ing here in 1947. In addition to Mr. Reed, of Southern Pines, she is survived by another brother, M. S. Reed, of Danville, lU.
