Peters came as able pinch-hit ter for Major Speed, safety di rector with the State Highway Patrol, last year’s speaker who had been invited for a return vis it. His talk followed a steak sup per held at the educational build ing of Page Memorial Methodist church in Aberdeen. He gave what he called “the Major’s message” in describing organization of the new State Safety Council, set up with a ‘program of action” to deal with all types of accidents, emphasiz ing those on the highways. Phil Ellis is director, heading a full time year-round staff of six, sup ported by contributions from va rious corporations, firms and banks. “It’s a Council of the people, for the people, bent on getting away from the papers and posters of the past which have failed to do the work and to get close to the people in an effort to secure statewide corporation toward safety,” Peters said. He noted, however, that “it is strange how difficult it is to get people to save their own lives and proper ty.” This won’t be done until traffic law violation is hated and de spised like any criminal type of violation, and is not condoned by ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays at 8 p. m. Judge Farrell, serving as program chairman, made his remarks from observa tion of many court cases, and these were expanded by Judge J. Vance Rowe of Moore Record ers Court. Judge Rowe, president of the officers organization, presiding over the program, took the occa sion to appeal for more support of the qfficers in their hard job of enforcing the laws. Not only behind the wheel but in the jury- box, and in insistence that offi cers do their duty and legislators pass better laws, must responsible citizenship be evidenced, he said. •‘It is the ‘good people’ who violate the speed laws, the ones who in terrible selfishness act as if they’re the only people on the highways, who cause most of the trouble,” said Judge Rowe. “When the traffic law violator thinks of his acts as criminal and himself as a criminal, then only will we reduce the killings and the maimings.” W. Lament Brown, for the exec utive committee, read the propos ed regulations for administering the association’s Insurance Fund which has been approved by the county commissioners and which will go into effect. January 1. Benefiting only those dues-paid members who are actually arrest ing officers, the Fund will be fi nanced not only through dues and initiation fees (for those joining later) but by $1 to be add ed to court costs in all criminal convictions in Moore courts (except non-support and aban donment cases).
