After prayer by the Rev. Wini- red Allison, Troop 851 of Eagle Springs had the opening ceremo nies under the direction of Scout master John F. McLean. Powers to Make Trip to Texas C. Coolidge Thompson, District Advancement chairman, present ed the attendance award to Man ly. Frank Wilson, Scoutmaster of Troop 864, accepted the award. The Star Rank was presented to Tommy Wilson of Troop 864, Manly, by Robert Viall, Scout master of Pinehurst. Second Class rank was present ed by the Rev. Mr. AUison to Larry Carpenter and Eugene Cur rie of Troop 68, Aberdeen. First Class rank was presented to Tommy Richardson and Earl Pitts of Troop 864, Manly, and Chris Slack of Troop 74, Robbins, by Willis E. Pritchard, advance- ifient committeeman. Douglas David of Pinebluff, vice chairman of the Moore Dis trict, presented merit badges to the following Scouts (the num ber of badges, if more than one, is listed after each boy’s name): Stanley Williams, Donald Garner, David Baldwin, Kirby Cheek, Stanley Williams, Donald Garner, Charlie Smoke. Powers, director of Guid ance services, Moore County Schools, has been awarded a trip to all the Air Force bases in the San Antonio, Texas, area during the week of November 20, with a group of guidance person nel from over the state. Among the many activities plan ned are briefings by the person nel of the Headquarters Air Training Command; tour of the Medical Center, Brooks Air Force Base; and a tour of the basic military training center. Lackland Air Force Base. It is hoped that this information will help counse lors in advising students concern ing an Armed Forces career. S-Sgt. Harold B. Riggins, the Air Force recruiter for this county last year, recommended Mr. Pow ers for this trip. T-Sgt. Ervin R. Hunter, the new Air Force re cruiting officer for Moore County, is assisting in planning the tour. Dedication of New Organ Set Dedication and formal presen tation of a new pipe organ at the Carthage Methodist Church will take place at the church Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Spencer, Sr., to honor his wife, Lena Fowler Spencer, is a two manual model By Gene Maples The Pinehurst High School basketbalf teams have played three undefeated games this sea son. The girls’ team, runners-up to the Conference Championship last s-eason, have outplayed their opponents both on paper and on the courts. The season’s opener, with West End contesting Pinehurst here, ended in a 53-42 decision for the Pinehurst girls. High scorer, with 28 points, was Judy Cameron; Patsy Hunt and Linda Hinson scored 17 and 8 points. Of 24 free throws attempted, 13 were made for 54 per cent accuracy. •Marshal Lewis was high scorer for the local boys, as he drove home 18 points; Butch Hardy ran a close second with 17. Nine of our 21 free throws were made for 43 per cent accuracy. Our boys played well and clinched the game 69-52. On November 10, Pinehurst girls racked up 54 points to their opponents Deep River’s 39, on the latter’s home courts. Judy Cameron was again high scorer for the local girls, with 32 points; Linda Hinson and Patsy Hunt each scored 11. Pinehurst at tempted 30 shots at the foul line and came home with 45 per cent ,accuracy—^Deep River girls saw 50 per cent of their free throws made. High scorer for the boys was again Marshal Lewis, with 22 points. Deep River played a return match here, November 13, with our girls winning 52-41. Pine hurst attempted 26 free throws and made 14 for 54 per cent. Pinehurst boys played hard and won, though outshot percent agewise. High scoring for the lo cals was Butch Hardy with 16 points; Harrington from Deep River came up with 15 points for his team. Pinehurst made 7 of 13 shots for 54 per cent; Deep River was more accurate with 10 of 18 for 56 per cent. The basketball season is always a favorite for everyone. Players on all teams deserve great credit for the long hours of hard work so that they will play well for their own satisfaction as well as for entertainment.
