(Humphrey photo) SON OF LOCAL RESIDENTS Gene Poe Given Fulbright Fellowship To Teach During Next Year in Turkey Gene Poe, 29, son of Mr. and^ Mrs. Bryan Poe of Southern Pines, has been granted a Ful bright Fellowship that will fi nance his teaching for a year in Turkey. To accept the fellowship, he has been granted a leave of absence from Colonie High School, Albany, N. Y., where he has been teaching mathematics for the past three years. He ap plied for the fellowship last No vember. An Albany newspaper, when the award was announced there, quoted him as calling it “a wonderful thrill.” There are many more applicants for Ful bright fellowships than the num ber granted. Mr. Poe, a veteran of service as a paratrooper with the 11th and 82nd Airborne Divisions, 1953-’56, is a graduate of South ern Pines High School. He at tended N. C. State College, Raleigh, for two years and com pleted his undergraduate work at State University College, Albany, where he later also received his master’s degree. He will leave for Turkey on completion of the current acade mic year, with the possibility that he might be sent to any of six cities. The principal of the high school where he is now teaching told the Albany newspaper that the THEATRE SUNRISE Walt Disney’s feature-length comedy, “Moon Pilot,” will open at the Sunrise Theatre Friday to run a full week, through Thurs day, May 17. Tom 'Tryon, Brian Keith and Edmond O’Brien, whose dialogue sets audiences laughing, are star red in the production. While two powerful nations, the United States and Russia, vie for supremacy in the grim race for space, Walt Disney takes off on the whole thing with the tale of a girl from outer space who in tercepts the Number one U. S. astronaut and launches a romance with no holds barred. Added to the general monkey shines is the performance of Charlie the Chimp, first earthling to the moon and back. Disney doesn’t miss a trick in this story, including Dany Saval, whom he found and hired in Paris after a world-wide search for the beauty most likely to be foimd en route to sipace. In color by Technicolor, “MoOn Pilot” stars Tryon, Keith and O’Brien, and introduces Miss HUSBAND TRANSFERRED Mrs. Alford to Leave Work With Sheriff’s Office Mrs. Louise Alford, secretary and radio dispatcher in the office of Sheriff W. B. Kelly at Carth age, has resigned, effective in June when she and her husband, Capt. Kenneth Alford, who is on the staff of the Carthage Prison Camp, will move to 'Troy. Captain Alford was transferred about a month ago to the First Offenders’ Camp at Troy and has been commuting to his work there from Carthage, pending preparation of a house for him and his wife at his new post. Mrs. Alford, the former Louise Williams of Route 1, West End, has been with the sheriff’s office since early in 1959 and is the first woman to work there. Her husband has been with the Carth age Prison Camp since February, 1959. Revival Planned At A. M.E. Church A week’s revival service will begin at Trinity A.M.E.
