(Mrs.) Irene F. Mullinix Clerk-Treasurer TOWN OF VASS, NORTH CAROLINA MIO Richard Whites Buy in Kenwood Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. White, former residents at Little River Farm between Southern Pines and Carthage, where Mr. White was employed for five years, have bought the former Hutchinson home on Fairway Drive in Ken wood. They have three sons, Bri an, 5; Bobby, 3; and Andy, one year old. Mr. White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald White of Aberdeen, is em ployed by John G. Hemmer, Pine- burst photographer. A graduate of high school in Macon, Ga., he served four years in the Marine Corps. He met his wife, the for mer Anne Marie Connary, daugh ter of Howard C. Connary of Stratford, N. H., and the late Mrs. Anna Platt Connary, while he was stationed at Portsmouth, N. H. Mrs. White, who is a substitute teacher of mathematics and other subjects at Pinehurst High School and also does private tutoring, was valedictorian of her 1951 high school class at Lancaster, N. H. She received her B. A. degree in mathematics from the Univer sity of New Hampshire in 1955. The Whites were married in July, 1956, and moved to the Sandhills in December of that year. were injured. Deputy Sheriff I. D. Marley said Mrs. Dewey Allred and her daughter-in-law Mrs. J. D. All- red received shotgun wounds when a group of men came to the Allred place on NC 705, s«sven miles north of Robbins, and open ed random fire. In the melee another woman. Dot Garner, was knocked down on the ground. Shotgun blasts riddled the front door and win dow screens of the house, pierced the window glass and peppered the outside wall, also the wall of a room just beyond. A studio couch and other furniture in the room were “full of pellets,” Mar- ley said. The officer said all the shoot ing was done from outside, with both pistols and shotguns, and that there was no exchange of shots as those of the Allred house had no weapons. He added, “It’s a God’s mercy no one was kill ed or seriously hurt.” He said two carloads of men, identified as “Montgomery Coun ty men” though not all were iden tifiable by name, drove up to the house asking if “Ruth Chriscoe” was there. Ruth Chriscoe is a young wom an of the Asbury Church commu nity in Montgomery County whom Larry Allred, son of Mrs. Dewey Allred, has been dating. She wasn’t there. Larry was, how ever, and when the visitors saw him they opened fire at random at the family gathered in the yard or at the door of the house, according to the officer’s report. Mrs. Dewey Allred, standing just inside the front door, receiv ed three shots in the arm and one in the back as she turned to run. Mrs. J. D. Sanders, who was near her, received a shot in the shoulder. After a few seconds of wild shooting the visitors left, and the Allreds called officers. Within a short time ABC Officer June Cockman and Deputy Sheriff I. D. Marley, who live in the neigh borhood, were on the scene, with Chief Deputy Herman Grimm ar riving later from Carthage. The Allreds said two brothers of the Chriscoe girl were in the party, and several others were identifiable by name. The offi cers took several warrants to Montgomery county, where they received full cooperation of Sher iff Sam Smitherman and his dep uties in searching for the men. The Saturday night search was fruitless but on Sunday they ar rested Pete Bean and Dempsey Odum, placing them in jail at Carthage pending a hearing, on charges of assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill, in flicting injuries. The investigation and search for th.2 other wanted men con tinued. Mothers Day...may 13 Surprise Mom with a Wonderful Gift From Melvin's, Aberdeen - Southern Pines SPORTSWEAR . . .
