Social Security Office Recognizes Marking Of ‘Senior Citizens Month’ In observance of the first na tional “Senior Citizens Month” during May, W. W. Thomas, Fay- .^tteville Social Security district manager pledged a renewed ef fort on behalf of his office staff to maintain a high level of serv ice to the aged residents of Moore and other counties in the district. Thomas pointed out that Presi dent Kennedy’s proclamation, designating May as Senior Citi zens Month, urges all persons “to cooperate in its observance by in creasing community awareness of the problems faced by older men and women, strengthening serv ices and opportunities to meet their special needs, giving recog nition to their past and present contributions, and making this special month the beginning of continuing interest and activity on their behalf.” Thomas cited the latest benefit statistics for this area as evidence of the contribution senior citizens make toward economic stability. He said more than 1,900 Moore County men and women over 65 receive social security monthly benefits which total more than $1,439,992 each year. “Studies show,” he added, “that the senior citizen spends the biggest part of his social security check in the communtiy for food, clothing and housing. And the number of peo ple receiving benefit is constant ly increasing as more and more people join the senior citizens rank each year.” Thomas invited all non-retired workers over 65 to visit the so cial security office for a complete explanation of the provisions of the social security law as it ap plies to the individual’s particu lar circumstances. And he urged senior citizens who. are working while receiving social security to phone or visit the district office if they have questions about how their earnings will affect their benefits.
