The Blue Knights earned 59 points to Carolina Military’s 89 points and Ellerbe’s 18 points. The Blue Knights took first place in the pole vault, high and low hurdles and mile run, and tied* for first in the high jump. Carolina Military picked up nine first places and Ellerbe received none. Mac Fowler was the high man for Southern Pines collecting 13 points while breaking his own Southern Pines High School re cord in the Pole Vault (10 feet, 4 inches), clearing 10 feet, 9 inch es. Dan Thomas broke the record for the hundred yard dash with a time of 10.5 seconds. The old one was 10.7 which he set last year. Sophomore Harry Webb broke the 120 yard high hurdle time by two seconds, posting a 17.8 time. Peter Pezzi equaled the 220 dash record of 25 seconds and* leaped 19 feet, llVi inches in the broad jump to take second place. The Blue Knights will compete in the Moore County Track Meet on May 6 which is to be held in Southern Pines and will com plete their season competing in the district meet. Sou. Pines School News By NANCY LELAND Honor Roll Report cards came out last Thursday, and the honor roll was announced on Monday. For the fifth six-week period the stu dents on the “A” honor roll were. Juniors — Charles McLaughlin and Nancy Tate; Sophomores— Marcia Telford and Stanley Whitley; and Freshmen — Gerry Gilmore and Faye Bigbee. On the “AB” honor roll were; Seniors—Pat Baldwin, Janet Howard, Susan Howe, and Rick Lewis; Juniors—Jeanne Allred, Larry Bradley, Lynn Daeke, Gene Harmon, Bobby Hiatt, Janet Phillips, Stephanie Pollock, and Gary West; Sophomores—Demp sey Bailey, Eddie Bridges, Janet Fullenwider, John McLaughUn, Alice Oliver, Charles Phillips, and Patsy Snipes; Freshmen— Lawrence Bachman, Nancy Blake, Lynda Buchan, Sharon Campbell, Sharon Cornett, San dra Crum, Linda Darden, Karen Davis, Steve Hassenfelt, Jane Harris, Steve Kelly, Mark Lid dell, Carolyn McRae, Linda Pate, Virginia Plummer, John Short, and Buddy Smith. Student Council Elections Primary elections for next year’s Student Council officers were held Tuesday. The follow ing survived to campaign Wed nesday and entered the final elec tions today (Thursday); for pres ident, Charles McLaughlin and Stephanie Pollock; for vice presi dent, Eddie Bridges and Charles Phillips; for corresponding secre tary, Janis Campbell and David Jones; and for recording secre- tary, Gerry Gilmore and Jane Mccioogan. The four new officers will be installed at an assembly next Wednesday, May 13, and I will inform you as to the re sults. Track Events The Moore County Field Day was held Wednesday, at which the Band played, under the direc tion of Mr. McAdams. The DiS' trict Meet is this Friday in Fay etteville. Law Day Recognized Last Thursday the high school students were privileged to hear W. Lament Brown, a local attor ney, speak in recognition of Law Day. Mr. Brown had the rapt attention of almost everyone in the gym, and was enjoyed thoroughly by all who heard hm speak. Band Tape to be Played The Marching Blue Knights presented their Band Concert last Friday night to a nearly full house. This year, though not great in quantity, their quality is ex cellent, and they have won many a compliment through their hard efforts. They played for the as sembly at which the Student Council candidates were named last Wednesday morning, and outdid themselves admirably. j The program of music which was taped two weeks ago will be played on Channel 5 on Saturday, June 20, at 2:30. Be sure to watch even if you saw the concert, and you won’t regret it. FTIA Fashion Show The FHA fashion show will be presented Monday to the mem bers of the PTA at the regular monthly meeting of the latter. The girls will be modeling their own creations and seem quite excited about the coming affair. Tennis Team Makes Good The tennis team competed with West Montgomery last Thursday on the away courts, and once again came home victorious. The scores were: Singles, Gouldsbrough, 6-1, 6-2; McLaughlin, 6-2, 6-1; McCrim- mon, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5; Daugherty, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1; Nanopoulos, 10-8, 6-0, Grover, 6-0, 6-1. In the doubles: Gouldsbrough and McLaughlin, 8-6,6-l, Mc- Crimmon and Daugherty, 10-8, 6-3; and Grover and Nanopoulos, 6-2, 6-4. This handful of players completed their whole season with only three losses. Considering its size and the fact that the team has been organized as such for only one year, it has Students Choose Colors, ‘Mascots’ For Union Pines “Carolina Blue” and white as the school colors, and Vikings as the “mascots,” have been approv ed by a large majority of future students of Union Pines consoli dated high school. These were the colors and mas cots selected by a “steering com mittee” of students elected by classes of Carthage, Cameron, Farm Life and Vass-Lakeview schools, which will be consolidat ed next fall at Union Pines, lo cated between Carthage and Vass. Forming the conunittee were, from Cameron, Margaret Hardy, Don Wood, Lewis Cooper and Chuck Kelly; Carthage, Kenneth Bom, Jimmy Branch, Bobby Lee and Martha Phillips; Farm Life, Harmon McDuffie, Ronnie Greene, Teddy Lingerfeldt and Deane Hardy; and Vass - Lake- view, Steve Frye, Sandra Von Metzger, Marjorie Bullock and Donna Baker. The selections were taken back to each school by its representa tives, for presentation and secret- ballot voting, resulting in over whelming approval. served to make SPH proud of each and every member. Coach Propst hopes to keep them inter ested in the game so that they will be eager to keep the team going next year. An even more successful season is in line for them if there are more who come out for the sport. Maybe even girls? Jr.-Sor. Saturday This busy week will be cli maxed by the Junior-Senior on Saturday night. Most of the up perclassmen are prepared with dates, dresses, etc., in anticipa tion of the big night. The usual newspapers are up at the win dows of the gym to prevent hav ing anyone see in and guess the theme.
