In MOORE COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT 5 Youths Bound To Superior Court On Charges Of Breaking, Entering Probable cause was found in Cagle, Robbins, assault with Moore County Recorder’s Court Monday against five Negro youths of Carthage on charges of break ing and entering an occupied dwelling in the night time for feolnpuryAte The charges were made by Lot- ta Smith, whose home the five al legedly broke into about 9 p. m. last Friday, June 12. Arrests were made by the Carthage pohce. Pleading not guilty at Monday’s hearing were Pete Wooten, 23; Jesse Charles Person, Willie Dowdy and Root Hampton, all 19, and Bobby Quick, 17. Bond was set at $250 each, which they did not immediately make, for their appearance at the August term of Superior Court. Among several assault cases, four involved defendants charged with assault on their wives. In two of the cases, those against Leland McNeill of Robbins, Route 1, who pleaded nolo contendere, and Thurmond Lee of Robbins, pleading not guilty, the defend ants were found guilty but nol pros with leave was taken on payment of costs, on request of the wives, who were the prosecu ting witnesses. Archie Dowdy of Carthage and Frank Goode of West End, Route 1 (Eastwood) both pleaded not guilty to charges of assault with deadly weapon on their wives, and both were convicted as charged. Dowdy drew 90 days, suspended for 12 months, while for Goode prayer for judgment was continued for a similar peri od, both on payment of a fine of $25 and costs and on condition of strict good behavior toward their wives. Goode was especially cau tioned not to “come home in a drunken condition and frighten his wife.” Other cases disposed of: Larry Kenneth Mashburn, Car thage, Route 1, exceeding safe speed, accident, $25 and costs; Al berta Richardson, Eagle Springs, Route 1, using vile and profane language, threats, etc., 30 days suspended for 12 months on pay- deadly weapon, not guilty; Peggy Cagle and Doris Cagle, Robbins, assault with deadly weapon (knife, hammer) inflicting serious injury, found guilty of engaging in affray, $1 and costs; Ada Brookfield Bryant, Pinehurst, driving while drunk, judgment continued on payment of $100 and costs, license to be suspend ed as provided by law; William Aaron Shamburger, Robbins, Route 2, careless and reckless driving resulting in fatal injury and hit-run, and Daniel William Wyatt, Robbins, Route 1, driving while drunk, improper turn re sulting in accident, personal in jury and death, hit-run, both pleaded not guilty, manslaughter hearing (in death of Levester Burch May 9) continued till next Monday at 2 p. m. Roy Lee Sheffield, West End, careless and reckless driving, ac cident, personal injury, leaving scene without giving aid and in formation, four months suspended for 12 months on payment of $50 and costs, defendant to pay or cause to be paid damage to other auto and medical and hospi tal expenses of persons injured in the collision and not to operate car on public roads of North Car olina in a careless and reckless manner or while in intoxicated condition; Robert Earl Everett, Carthage, careless and reckless driving, defendant asks for jury trial, denied in accordance with statute, pleaded guilty as charg ed, warrant amended to charge defendant with speeding in ex cess of 100 mph, sentenced to four months on roads, notice of appeal given and bond set at $350. McNEILL Home and Garden Club Mrs. Ralph Caldwell and Mrs. Roy Bender were hostesses to the Aberdeen Home and Garden Club Tuesday morning in the home of Mrs. Caldwell. Mrs. Sam Swaringen, presidpt, presided over the business session. Annual reports of officers and committee chairmen were given. A flower show followed with prizes awarded in three cate gories: potted plant, large ar rangement and miniature ar rangement. Mrs. James Bishop’s lovely pink geranium won in the first category. Mrs. Sam Swarin- gen’s large arrangement of mix ed flowers in varied hues cap tured the prize as did her minia ture arrangement, which had been artistically placed in a floral lipstick container and comple mented by a miniature pair of scissors placed on the table to the side of the arrangement. A delicious luncheon followed and the group adjourned until their September meeting. WSCS Ilsets The Woman’s Society for Chris tian Service met Monday after noon at the church. Mrs. H. W. Doub, president, presided over the business session. Reports from delegates of the Louisburg Retreat held last week were given. Mrs. J. E. Sponen- berg gave the closing meditation. Bridge-Luncheon Mrs. George Anderson was hostess to members of her bridge club and two guests, Mrs. Need ham Mar ley nad Mrs. Mack Wal lace, on Tuesday afternoon. A delicious luncheon was en joyed followed by several pro gressions of bridge. Mrs. C. D. McGowan was high scorer of the afternoon; Mrs. Wallace was guest high; and Mrs. David Hobbs was low scorer. Others playing were Mrs. Marley, Mrs. Bob Farrell, Mrs. Dan Farrell, Mrs. Lawrence Johnson, and Mrs. N. A. Pleas ants. Biiefs Mrs. W. S. Taylor and daugh ter, Mrs. Dan Currie, Jr. and son, Baxter Taylor, Mrs. George An derson and John; Mrs. David Hobbs and Joy, and Mrs. Robert Farrell and Robbie spent last week at Ocean Drive. They were joined for the weekend by W. S. Taylor, George Anderson, David Hobbs, Robert Farrell and Sidney Taylor Jr. Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Currie and son and Baxter Taylor remained at the beach for this week and were joined for several days by Mrs. Ralph Leach, Mrs. Grady Webb and daughter of Raleigh. Mrs. Vesta Funderburk spent smnr We’re eelebrating the 18th Anniversary of the opening of our business in Southern Pines. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Russell spent the weekend in Hampton, Va. with Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Rus sell. Dr. and Mrs. Francis Pleasants, Jr. and daughter of Columbia, S. C. spent a recent Sunday with his parents here. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Sloan and Cam of Raleigh spent a recent mother. weekend with Mr. and Mrs. John Sloan. Mrs. Jesse Wimberley and chil dren spent the weekend in West End with her mother. Mrs. Robert Gavin and sons, Edward and John David, of San ford were Sunday afternoon vis itors of Dr. and Mrs. W. C. Neill and family. Mrs. John D. McLeod visited Dr. and Mrs. John D. McLeod and family in Lynchburg, Va. last week. Robert Burns accompanied Mr. and Mrs. W. H. McNeill, Jr. to Camp Hill, Pa. last Wednesday and accompanied their famliy to the World’s Fair during the week end. Young people from Bethesda who attended the Senior Camp at Camp Monroe last week were Lindsay Neill, Johnny Burns, and Gene Lewis. Miss Mary Stuart Harmon ar rived last week for an extended visit with Mrs. J. Frank Mizell. Mrs. Page Jones of Alberta, Va. is visiting her daughter and son- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Cop ley and family.
