Simpson, Route 1, Cameron, re cently participated in an annual practice missile firing on a Brit ish missile firing range on the 1 Hebrides Islands, in the Atlantic [Ocean. .. . Use of the Hebrides Islands for practice missile firing by U. S. Army missile battalions was arranged by the Ministry of De fense, London, and the Depart ment of Defense, Washington, D. C. The new provision for prac tice firing was drawn up to solve the problem of transporting the missile battalions to firing ranges in the U. S. Simpson, assigned to the 5th Battalion, 77th Artillery in Ger many, entered the Army in Octo ber, 1962. He completed basic training at Fort Gordon, Ga., and arrived overseas in March, 1963. Gentry, Jr., a repre sentative of Aetna Casualty and Surety Company at Southern Pines, is attending a special in surance course at the company’s home office, Hartford, Conn. The course began August 17 and runs through September 18. The course provides compre hensive instruction in all forms of insurance protection for both individuals and business firms. Practical aspects are stressed with particular emphasis placed upon the study of new methods and developments designed to meet changing conditions. Hodgkins, Jr., proclaimed September as Sight Saving Month for Southern Pines in cooperation with the local Lions Club White Cane Drive. Hodgkins, Jr., has proclaimed September as “Sight Saving Month,” in cooper ation with the local Lions Club White Cane Drive to be conduct ed this year September 14-19. The drive is run in connection with the National Society for the Prevention of (Blindness, the North Carolina Association for the Blind and the North Carolina State Commission for the Blind. In his proclamation Mayor Hodgkins said “I call upon my fellow citizens of this community to conserve the vital resource of good vision by learning the habits of good eye care, and by supporting research efforts which will help all men enjoy the blessing of healthy eyesight.” The North Carolina Associa tion for the Blind is a Lions Club-sponsored project organ ized in 1934 as a non-profit, state wide organization supported by the Lions through the annual fund raising drive. Along the services rendered by the State association are: eye treatment, providing glasses and artificial eyes, gift radios to shut- ins, white cane walking sticks, drugs, X-rays and transporta tion. The State-wide organiza tion also assists in sponsoring visual aids clinics, medical eye clinics The Eye Bank of North Carolina glaucoma detection clinics and educational materials on the prevention of blindness. Joe P. Marley, chairman of the Southern Pines Lions Club White Cane Drive, said last week that club members will be con tacting local businesses during the third week in September for contributions. The general public will be given an opportunity to contribute to the campaign at the end of the' drive, according to Marley.
