F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., of Phila
delphia, was elected president of
the National Steeplechase and
Hunt Association recently at
the Annual Meeting of the group.
He becomes the seventh person
to head the Association since its
inception in 1895 and succeeds
John W. Hanes.
Dixon has been active in na
tional racing affairs for some
time and has served as vice-presi
dent of the Association since 1963.
The Association also elected
James P. Mills of Middleburg,
Va., as vice-president and Lewis
C. Murdock of Peapack, N. J. as
treasurer. Re-elected were S.
Bryce Wing as honorary chair
man; A. C. Bostwick, secretary;
John E. Cooper, executive secre
tary; and Olive R. Keeley, Asis-
tant secretary.
The rotation policy of the As
sociation resulted in the election
of four new stewards, Philip F.
N. Fanning, Lewis C. Ledyard,
Randolph D. Rouse and Charles
W. Stitzer who is a former win
ter resident of the Sandhills and
is well known in racing and
hunting circles in this area.
Dixon expressed an optimistic
view for 1965 and sees it as anoth
er excellent year for steeplechas
ing at the major tracks and hunt
meetings.
Earlier in the day, the Hunts
Committee elected Austin A.
Brown of Camden, S. C., as chair
man, succeeding Newell J. Ward,
Jr. Brown, a former amateur
rider, has served as an area re
presentative on the Hunts Com

The Hunts Committee also ap
proved racing dates for the year.
The 1965 schedule in general fol
lows the pattern of previous
years with some notable excep
tions.
The season opens one week
earlier than usual. The Block
House Races at Tryon, usually
run in early April, will start the
season on March 20, followed by
the Carolina Cup at Camden, S.
C., on March 27 the Deep Run
Hunt race Association program
at Richmond, Va., April 3, and
the Stoneybrook meeting here,
April 10.
The Tanglewood meeting at
Clemmons, N. C. will be missing
from the Spring agenda this year
due to certain legal problems.
The race meeting was established
in 1963 and quickly became a
popular addition to Hunt Racing
in the Carolinas, and is expected
to be renewed in 1966.
Eleven other hunt race meet
ings are scheduled for the Spring,
through May 22. Like all the
above dates, they are scheduled
on Saturdays.
Major track steeplechasing will
begin at Aquaduct May 3 and
