The Traitor In The Ranks ? spy ia a contemptible person, but ft traitor ia a thousand times worse. Every doctor, whan he receives his degree. Doctor In Medicine, takes the Hlppokratic Oath. Ha solemnly awears not to do certain harmful or deleterl t>ua things. He swears that whatever houses he may enter, he will go Into them for the benefit of the sick and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief or corruption. Every good doctor lives up to that oath. But there are raacals in all pro feaaiona. Now and then a doctor for gets his responsibility and lndulgea in deliberate miachlef and corruption ? be aooulesceB in the criminal desire of lone family to conceal the exiatence of contagious disease from the health authorities. This ia a vicious act of corruption which ought to cancel the doctor'a license to practlca In the ptate. Sometimes It la Lard to aay no. ?HARD TO SAY, NO." Jf It la a Quarantfnable Disease Don't Ask Your Doctor to Call It Some thing Else to Avoid Quarantine. There are selfish people In every com munity who care nothing for the wel fare or safety of their neighbors and ?top at nothing to evade the law gov erning the Isolation of contagious dis ease. Such people will appeal to the doctor to make an exception in their case, in order to avoid injury to their business or something like that. If the doctor is square and honest he will do his duty and refuse to be a party ?o fraud. If hp is crooked he may give In to tho pleadings of the family and ooneent ta the conspiracy against pub lic welfare. Such a physician merit# * severe penalty. lie is a traitor to , the Stat* that grants him the right to i practice. The sooner he Is relieved ?f his license the better for the com munity which is at his mercy A doc tor without hoaor Is a menace to his patients, from the ver y nature of the I relation he bears to them. The State Board of Health means to punish every doctor who Is found KUilty of this corrupt practice. Thank goodness, very few physicians indeel are guilty, nut the rascals do get Into the profession occasionally, and the health authorities of North Caro lina feel bound to protect the public against the traitors within the ranks of the healers. People of ordinary intelligence will readily understand that a physician who is corruptible in behalf of his patient Is not to be relied upon In other matters. A good doctor will go far to protect the legitimate interests of his patients, but he will stop short of a crime always. North Carolina wants good doctors to take care of the people. She will have none of the crooked kind, if the State Board of Health ran help it. Health authorities everywhere un hesitatingly condemn the ancient su perstition that any disease could pos sibly be good for a child or an adult. The idiboic idea that a rhllrt ought to have such diseases as whooping-cough, measles, etc., and be over with them, belongs in the museum of antiques along with the night air bogy and the (illusion that alcohol makes you strong. An excuse for treason sometimes of fered In behalf of the gwilty doctor is that the attack is "only scarlatina" or "scarlet rash"? but the truth is that these are but other names for scarlet fever, all the same disease. "Your readers have read too often of Florida's delightful winter climate, her fruits and vegetables, historic towns and other points of interest, so I shall in this letter omit these things and call to your consideration the big fish which was recently caught down in Florida waters," writes Mr. John A. Mitchener, of Selma, who is now visiting his son, Mr. A. W. Mitchener, at Miami, Fla. Mr. Mitchener writes: "My son, A. W. Mitchener, saw the fish while be ing captured. I have had my hands on the fish and my head in hiB mouth. He is now on exhibition here. Just think of a fish 45 feet lpng with a liver weighing 1,500 pounds, and had just swallowed another fish weighing 1,000 pounds, and you will want to read the whole story." The whole story referred to by Mr. Mitchener occupies more than three columns in the Miami Daily Herald, and though he asks us to publish it, it is too long for our use at this time. However, we are making an extract from the article which will give our readers a good idea of this great fish. Facts About the Deep Sea Mystery. It is 45 feet long. It is 23 feet 0 inches around. It is 8 feet 3 inches in diameter. It eighs 15 tons ? 30,000 pounds. Its mouth is 38 inches wide 43 inches deep and 31 inches from lip to lip when wide open. Its tail measures 10 feet from tip to tip. Its pectorial fin is 5 feet long by 3 feet wide. , Its dorsal fin is 3 feet long by 2 feet 9 inches wide. Its skin is 3 inchcs thick and its gills 4 feet long. It has swallowed an animal weigh ing 1,500 pounds that was still alive in its stomach. Its liver alone weighed 1,700 pounds and it had swallowed several hun dred pounds of coral and other ma terial. It was captured in the vicinity of Knight's Key, Florida, after a fight lasting 39 hours. Five harpoons and 151 bullets were required to subdue it and it took five days to finally kill it. It smashed a boat into thousands of pieces and knocked the rudder and propeller off a 31-ton yacht. It had to be towed by an ocean go ing tug more than 100 miles to bring it ashore at Miami. It was mounted by J. S. Warmbeth, expert taxidermist recommended by the Smithsonian Institute, Washing ton, D. C.
