Ou Friday evening last after tho business of our ofllce was done in good shape, and a ffW hours left us, to be called our own, before the gingle of the supper bell, ye editor, cccompaniod by the bnsiuess man. ager. repaired to the commodious "Equine Bazaar" of B. F. Owous, where a fine rig was left at our orders, and after taking in the town we made for the country home of Mr. Frod Davenport, over rough roads ttLd across ditches, (for the bridges had been taken away by the heavy rains), w.e at laRt arrived at the end of our journey, but the landlord was about a mile out in the field, which distance wo had to tramp over the cotton and corn row. Ou return ing to the house our host set out his best sider, which tho manager enjoyed alone, ns we do not indulge. We enjoyed the tramp through the field, aud were surprised to see the crops looking ho well. Mr. Davenport tells us that his crop is not injured a great deal by tho recent wet weather. After taking in all that was of any in terest we bade farewell to the gontlcuian, wishing him much success, as a farmer, a brick maker, a mail contractor and a friend to newspaper men. - "Oiaiy Mariah." Complaint was made before Mayor L thani, on Wednesday, against " Crazy Mariah," as a nnisauco to tho town. His honor at once ordered her arrest and con finement tvhiah, was, after some trouble, executed by offioer Truett. The affidavit was issued by Justice Thoa. S. Armistead and signed by Mr. J. W. Bryan, druggist. This womoti is nndonbtedly insane ns Dr. W. II. Ward testified alter examii.a tiou and her confinement is a relief to the town. Justice Armistead has written to the president of the colored Insane Asylum at Goldsboro to know if there is room for her in that institution. If a favorable reply is received nhe will be taken at once to the Asylum where she will ba cared for. This woman's real name is Mariah Avoi ibteitd. She baa, at various times. b?en subject to spells of insanity for years. Sh was taken to tho Asylum romo time ajjo, where she only remained a few months, as her mind was restored for tho tic.e, she was released aud sent home. This time She should bo kept there, for when tbcc spells are on nor aho is a great trouble to tho town. The Eastern Advncate, of F.donton, -lias Resignation of Police Tucker- Mr. Jos. Tucker, who has served the town of Plymouth ro faithfully for the past three or four years as Chief of Police, tendered his resignation on Monday last Which was accepted. Mr. J. F. Ayers has beeu elected to fill the vacancy. ( Mr. Tucker has ever done his duty and eiveu universal satisfaction, and in his resignation our town looses' one of its most efficient officers. He has been ' given a position on the Albemarle fc Raleigh Railroad, as Section Master. We wh hiio every success ia his new work. Mr. Ayers will no donbt make a Rood officer " B.e wai for a long time Deputy Sbei iff of this township and filled tht oilioe well. The Cattle Question Our sister town, Edenton, has passed a law prohibiting cattle from the streets. We hope that it will not be repealed as soon as it was in Plymouth. , Wo are informed that a petetion to repeal the cattle law, was taken around this town by some man who owned cattle, and that it is filled with the names of colored people. . We are sorry to sao bur colored friends have such little interest in the town, they should take more interest in trying to improve their homo. It is true that it is eome trouble to keep cattle shut up, but it is less trouble than for tho general public to have to contend with them . Some one said, "They don't get in tho way of anyone only the young courting couples." If ho will walk down Third street or Washington street and notice who are troubled, we know he will change his opinion. We-have spoke of this .great nuisance several' times before aud will keep it np as long as the people complain. If tbo town Is to ba run by petitions start out tho next best -how about horses arid hoge ruuuing at large. , School Committees. 'As the tim3 is near at hand for the ap pointnient of School Committers for the various districts, both white and colored, throughout the county, I desire to call the attention of the patrons of ourpublie schools to the following section of tha present school law touching this very important matter : , "For each white and each colored Hchool district there shall be elected bieunia'Jy by tne County Board of Education of the re spective counties, on tho first Mouday in September, a School Committee of three persons, whoso term of service shall begin the first Monday of October following, &a." Iu tht first place it is especially desirable that committeemen should bo selected who will give their personal attention to the school interests iu their districts, and sec. ondly, that intelligent men may ba fouud to act, thus avoiding tho necessity for wit. uesss to their Kignatures and the troubles resulting therefrom. The office itself being a responsibility voluntarily taken for the law gives no authority to compel its acceptance by any one- -it is earnestly recommended that present school committees give proper notice that meetings will be held in the various districts throughout' the county, at the respective school houses or some other convenient place on some day during the present mouth, when the selection of school committees to b recommended for ap pointment, be made a majority of the pitrons detidiug whom they prefer. In all cases have it understood that the parties so recommended will accept if appointed, as no little inconvenience is thereby saved the Board in making repeated apfpointnicuts for failure to quaiify on the part of thone named at the September mee'ing, and much injury done tho schools in not having properly organized commit, tees to begin work, as the law directs, on the 1st of October following. The adoption of this method I am quite confident wonld give best satisfaction to ull parties and avoid the complaints so often mado, and unjustly, when the proper information as to who should be suitable appointees is not furnished the board in time, of objectionable oommittccmen. Name your committees now in meetings assembled for that purposs, be assured that they will accept, auS the task of complying witli your wishes on September 2d will be rendered a comparatively easy one. The Now Bcrnc Journal says: The am. bition to briug up boys without tho neces. sity for work leads them to acquire taste for dress, styl, luxuries, and amusements, which cannot form any solid foundation for manly or gentlemanly character." The School Funds- At the meetiug of the Board of County Commissioners on Aug. "th 1880, among other, the following proceedings were had : A petition having been filed before tho Board of County Commissioners praying said Board to call the Magistrates together in joint session with said Board to take further action concerning the school lands of Washington ' county lost by Dempsey Spruill, lato Sheriff and Treasurer of said county, by the failuro of the Exchange National Bank of Norfolk, Va.
