CORN STOVER A GOOD FEED FOR LIVE STOCK. Valuable For .Several Rea sons, West Raleurh, N. C. Aupr. 27. Stover has its chief value for v feeding those animals at lij?ht work, those boing fattened slow ly, and for those being simply maintained through the winter months." The majority of farm ers probably do not realize that it contains a considerable part of the total nutrients of the corn crop. As a rule, about one half the total weight of the corn crop is found in the car, the other half being the stalk and leaves. About 75 per cent of the digesti ble protien is in the ear and about 25 per cent in the "stover. Whan all the nutrients hte taken together the ear furnishes about GO to (J5 per cent of the digesti ble nutrients and the siover . rom , 35 to 40 per cent. Stover h not so well suited for. animals which arc being fatten ed rapidly or those which are giving large quantities of milk ; although, with these kinds of animals, it is so valuable that th 3 farmer cannot afford to dis regard it. EXPERIMENTAL PROOF. In some work done at the Ire dell Bran?h Station, stover was found to be exceptionally valua ble in feeding stockers which were being carried over the win ter when fed in conjunction with corn silage. The Massa chusetts Station, as a result of four years experiments, found that moderately thin yearling steers lost only 33 pounds per head when wintered on whole corn stalks or corn stover alone Corn stover will, therefore, fur nish nearly a maintenance ration for animals which are merely being cirri ad through the cold months. In some trials at the Nebraska Station, two year-eld steers, fed one half alfalfa hay pius one half corn stover, did nearly as well as thos3 fed clear alfalfa hay, similar amounts of grain bjing fed in both cases. Trials at the New Hampshire Station show that shreddtd com stover may be considered a good . substituLvj for timothy for win ter feeding of horses when fed with concentrates. In some tria's conduced ac the Wisconsin Sta tion, whore corn stover was fed to some milk cows, it wad found that 42 p)unds of stover waS somewhat superior to 13 1 2 pounds of good mixed hay. I n ci second trial it was found th?,t 11 1-2 pounds of clover hay pro duced somewhat more than 33.3 p and of corn stover. Reduced to tons, it was found that one ton of mixed clover and timothy hay was worth three tons of corn stover, and that one ton of clover was somewhat superior to three tons of corn stove r. The hiys were fed in conjunction with good grains. A few v ears ago the Missouri Stat ion c inducted a series of experiments to determine tm value of corn stoker lor getting yearling st-ioiv: through the cold months, it was found, in brief, that one ton of timothy hay, when fed to young animals of this kind, was worth about three Latest Fall GlotMiig w jJgBBB : r ' ... , 4 7'hXt' A. fefcf rtl 2.
