Poovey. Tho days of “Old Dominecker” are numberoi.1, just as are the days of the Razorback and “Old Mooley.” They are very K-od of their kind, but their kind are just conimon scrubs. And the Ecrub can’t pay for its keep at the prft:cnt hi'rh price of feed, whether it be a cow, hop: or hen. F'irst, it pays to hcep thorout?h’.:red poultry. True, it costs more to pet a start with them, if you start with tho riirht breed and strain, they will foon pay back this extra cost, and then it will cost no more to keep a flock of thoroughbreds than it will the same number of scrubs.. Sccond, it pay;i to sell thorough bred poultry and its products. True, tho market price of common eggs went to fifty cents per dozen in mid- v/intcr, but that was because common eggs were not being laid by very many common hens, but my thorough bred flock were averaging 75 per cent. Still I didn’t sell an egg at the’ top of the market', because I could get three or four times the top market price for eggs for hatching purposes. True also, that common five*riionths-old cockerels brought $1.00 apiece as broilers, but I had more calls than I could supply for thoroughbred cock erels of the same age at $5.00. Third, it is impossible to improve thoroughbreds. By culling the eggs, Hie young birds that are irregular, and the pullets that are undersized or poor layers, and especially by get ting a new male that is unrelated to the females about every two years, the breed can be kept up to standard and the strain can be improved. For thoroughbreds will degenerate, and a degenerated thoroughbred is no bet ter than a scrub. In line with my UFual policy I have this v/eek put a $10 setting of cp,"-. under u hen from which I expect to hatch a male for ■ my Hock of gol.ici; beautic;-, next sca- j son. I Fourth, thoroughbreds can be ex- i h'bitcd in the Fair of Poultry Show. I It is to encourage boys and girls to I begin breeding them that I have g'ven a prize fcr two successive seasons fer the best pair of thoroughbreds of any breed. This year 1 shall give a pair ! of young birds from ray flock for the I best pair of Dulf Orpingtons bred j and exhibited by any club member in the county. I limit my prize to the one bree ! this year at the request of the County Demonstrator, as ho expects to have a similar prize for other breeds. NOTICE TOTEACHERS For all Echocls that have already ended the session of 1918—1919. I desire that these school committees of said districts meet in my olFice on some Monday or Saturday after ten days notice to the patrons of said districts for the purpose of electing teachers for the next session, and al so, for the puropse of planning de- fnite work for the year. The lav/ gives us a six months school term and we must plan to take advantage of it—work without a definite plan is as a rule a great failure, now, th:re fore think of your greatest needs and lay them before me. The County Board of Education meets in regular session every lirst Monday, so, please come op those days for any and all oITicial requests. The County Board has undertaken a great building and repairing program, and it is our desire to aid all the dis tricts possible— some of these dis tricts in the county are in need of a better building than they have and I hope that the various school com- j mittees and patrons will plan to get aid for their respective districts be fore the next session. Come in and laik the matter over with me and the County Board . Yours for success A. F. MITCHELL, Co. Supt. NO REASON FOR IT When Breyard Citizens Show a Way.
