Mars Hill Woman Charged
In Fatal Three-Car Accident
A Mars Hill woman has been
charged with driving while
impaired and death by vehicle
in connection with an April 2
three-car accident on U.S. 19
that killed a Micaville woman.
Mary York Joyce, 48, of
Mars Hill was charged on
April 3 by Highway Patrolman
C.E. Taylor, who investigated
the accident some 2.65 miles
east of Burnsville. Taylor ob
tained blood samples from
Joyce at the Burnsville Health
Care Facility, where she was
treated and released. The
blood sample was sent to the
State Bureau of Investigation
laboratory in Raleigh for
analysis.
According lo police reports.
Maude Woody Hughe*, M, of
Mtcaville, died when the 1977
Ford Pinto driven by her
daughter, Chriatina Gay
Hughes, 4S, of MicaviUe,
swerved into the left lane of
U.S. 19 East to avoid the car
driven by Joyce, which was
coining toward her in the
wrong lane.
Witnesses at the scene told
the investigating officer that
they had seen Joyce's car
swerving in the highway
shortly before the accident.
The officer said he recovered
a partially consumed bottle of
wine under the driver's seat of
the 1981 Buick driven by
Joyce.
According to evidence at the
scene, Joyce was driving the
1W1 Buick toward BurnsviUe
when the car crossed the
center line. Mrs. Hughes ap
parently saw the car and
swerved to the left to avoid a
collision. The Joyce vehicle
then hit the Hughes car on the
right side, sending it into a
skid across the left lane
where it came to rest on the
left edge of the roadway.
After hitting the Hughes
vehicle, the Joyce vehicle
skidded down the road
backwards and struck a 1977
Mercury driven by Gloria
Thomas Burleson of
Micaville. Mrs. Burleson was
driving behind the Hughes
vehicle and had pulled off the
road to the right and was just
getting stopped when the was
hit by the car driven by Joyce.
Mrs. Burleson was not injured
in the accident.
After hitting the second car,
the Joyce vehicle struck a
guardrail on the right side of
the road and came to rest.
In addition to the fatality, a
14-year old girl, Amber
Hughes, and her mother,
Christina Hughes were taken
to Memorial Mission Hospital
in Asheville. Both the child
and her mother remain
hospitalized on Monday at
Memorial Mission Hospital in
Asheville. A hospital
spokesman said the girl re
mains in guarded condition
while her mother remains
