Urged For Seniors State health officials are urging senior citizens and people with chronic illnesses to get their flu shots now. Flu usually arrives in late fall and early winter, but immunization must be given well in advance for the immunity to have time to develop. "It's particularly important people in the high risk group, generi ly people over 65 or those with chron illnesses such as diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease, to get their flu shots now," said Dr. J.N.-MacCor mack, chief of the North Carolina Dept of Human Resources' Epidemiology Branch. Flu i is usually mild in children, young adults and middle-aged people who are healthy. It can be a life threatening disease, however, for older adults and those with chronic il lness because it lowers the body's resistance, making a person more susceptible to infections like pneumonia, one of the leading causes of death among people over 65.
