Madison High Patriots Complete Best Season Ever $$$&/: '^'Sl THE MADISON HIGH PATRIOTS closed out their most successful season ever last week, finishing the season with a record of 15-5. Ivy Conference Champions , 1985 THE LADY PATRIOT TRACK TEAM completed ils most successful season in history last week by winning the Ivy Conference championship for the second con secutive year. A-B Tech Offers Calligraphy A beginning Calligraphy course will be offered by the Madison County Center of Asheville-Buncombe Technical College beginning May 17, 1963. The class will meet each Friday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. for 11 weeks at the Senior Citizen Center on Long Branch Road in Marshall. Ken Gregory will be the instructor. Students will learn to use a calligraphy pen and points, with several styles of lettering. The cost includes a $19.00 registration fee and approximately $17.00 for supplies. Persons 65 years of age and over are exempt from the registration fee. Pre-registration is required by call ing the Madison County Center in Marshall at 649-2947. The Center will accept collect calls. Burleson Is Trig Star Victor Burleson is North Buncombe High School's TRIG-STAR for Victor Burleson son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Burleson, won the designation. Buncombe High School's STAR for 1984-85 in competi in Mrs Maney's Trigonometry is a trigonometry has demonstrated in Martin Proclaims "Year Of The Teacher" North Caroina Gov. James G. Mar tin has proclaimed 1965 as the Year of the Teacher. Martin announced the proclamation during a public meeting in Jacksonville on May 16. Martin said, "The teaching profes sion consists of more than three million teachers at all levels of educa tion who play a major role ill educating our nation's children and individuals of all ages. Kramer will join his brother, Keith, on the Lion football squad. iaurej Squads Sweep Pre -Season Tourney Laurel teams swept to champion ships in both divisions of the pre season tournament sponsored by the Madison County Girls' Softball League over the weekend in Mars Hill. In the 13-15 year old division. Laurel blasted the Mars Hill Thrillers sponsored by Skyland Freightline, 23-5. Mars Hill's Lisa English and Kristina Whaley each had two hits in the losing effort. Laurel's Dahn Cut shall had four hits for the champions. Laurel's Diane Cutshall was named the tournament's MVP. In the 9-12 division. Laurel took a 29-0 win over Marshall to win the title. Laurel's Tammy King was named the tournament MVP in the younger divi sion. King had 12 hits in 14 at-bats over the weekend. In Saturday's championship game, Laurel's Cindy Franklin was the winning pitcher and had five of her team's 35 hits. i In earlier games in the 9-12 divi sion. Laurel posted a 25-4 win over the : Phil-Co Cougars with Cindy Franklin i pitching Marshall took a 24-10 win from the Mars Hill Blue Jays Amber Caulley, Jennifer Ball and Casey Waldroup each had three hits for Marshall. Cindy Franklin also pitched Laurel to a 17-2 win over Hot Springs as Tam my King collected four hits. In the 13-15 division, the Carolina Girls defeated the Blue Angels squad, 27-4, with Ila Rice pitching. Laurel took an easy 18-0 win over Steen's Wildcats with Leslie Shelton collec ting four hits. Skyland Thrillers advanced to the championship with a 31-12 win over Hot Springs as Thrillers' Deana Grif fin, Christy Grigg and Jenny Rice each collected three hits. In one of the tournament's only close games, Laurel downed the Carolina Girls, 8-5 to advance to the championship as Leslie Shelton had three hits for the winners.
