MEMORY VERSE Psalm I.1R1 I The Everyday Counselor -By- REV. HERBERT SP U GH, D. D. Here is one of those letters I simply must share with my read ers: it's too encouraging to keep. It proves what I have written many times in this column: "Prayer changes things," when it is offered in faith and the one who prays is willing to usv what God gives. Nearly two years ago a corre spondent wrote me concerning the desperate condition of their homi' as a result of alcohol. She asked to be placed on my prayer li-t Now comes this letters: "I wrote you nearly two years ago concerning myself and my hus band. "One day when I felt I could stand ii no longer. 1 fell on my knees, told God that I was help less and asked His help: that if He would forgive me and give me he strength that I would never touch another drop. "He heard my prayer and gave me the strength. From that morn ing nearly two years ago I have never tasted a drink in any form, and now I can't even stand to smell it. "Then I began praying for my husband, lie went on the same way for sometime, couldn't under stand how 1 could refuse drink when lie hroiiL'ht it home. I told ! 1 1 : ii that the Lord had saved me and I was praing for him. "Then something happened. He came home about 3:00 o'clock one morning crying, fell on his knees on the floor, prayed for mercy un til about f:00 o'clock. He was kneel ing by our little son's bed who was terribly frightened, as he thought his father was drunk and going to tear up things as usual. Then he took the child in his arms, told him that he was talking to God. ' He. too. won the victory, and from that date has never gambled nor touched another drop of liquor. He now ow ns his own business and all of his equipment which is paid for including an automobile. He is teaching in our Sunday school and I am playing the piano there. "I am so happy I don't know how to tell you, but as you share the same faith I know you will understand." Here it is a case where the one who prayed earnestly and desper ately for strength received it, then used it as it came. At first it was hard. She writes that the tate for liquor did not leave her imme diate !'. but as she struggled, she pr ied and won the victory. Prayer alone is not enough. What Makes a People Great Religion In the Home HIGHLIGHTS ON THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON By NEWMAN CAMPBELL (The International Uniform Lesson on the above topic for Feb. 24 is Deuteronomy 5-34. the Memory Verse being Psalm 135:1, "O give thanks unto Jehovah: for He is good.") MANY PEOPLE are much wor ried these Jays because of the ap parent failure of the home. In our own country, which has not suf fered from bombing destruction, homes have been disrupted in many, many cases, by the absence, death or serious injury of hus bands and fathers. Mothers have been doing work in factories and offices as well as keeping the home going In many far too many cases divorce has broken up the home, leaving children torn between fa ther and mother, or with only one parent to rely upon, when children need both. How can children be properly supervised and taught as they should be in such homes? How can religion be taught in homes such as these? And if it is not taueht and practiced at home, it surely cannot be expected that the short period of Sunday school only will give them the foundations for a Christian training. Mother and father working together in harmony make a real home in which ethics and religion are taught which stay with a child all his life. Such a home is visualized by Moses when he tells the Israelites: "Hear, O Israel Jehovah our God is one Jehovah. Thou Shalt Love Jehovah "And thou shalt love Jehovah thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might "And these words, which I com mand thee this day, shall be upon thy heart. "And thou shalt teach them dili gently unto thy children and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way. and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up." Only loving and devoted daily teaching in a happy home can In culcate love of God and obedi ence to His ways In our children. In these commandments of Je hovah's the Jews were commanded by Moses, "And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets be tween thine eyes." This was origi nally a figurative expression, but later a sign on the hand denoted a phylactery on the biceps of the left arm, and frontlets between the eyes a phylactery on the fore head. Each phylactery contained tour sections from the Pentateuch, ' DWffttitea fcjr tfni t'eacufti Syaaicate, ine. inscribed on scrolls of parchment. The men's phylactery was made in this way, and we quote: "A piece of leather is soaked, stretched on a square block cut for the pur pose, sewed together with good strings while wet and left on the block till it is dry and stiffened so that when it is taken off it forms a square leather box." "And thou shalt write therrr upon the doorposts of thy house, and upon thy gates." The box of which this "phylactery for the home is made has on the outside, to the right, the regular three pronged letter Shin, being an ab breviation for the word God, and on the left side a four-pronged let ter, the abbreviation for Sabbath." It is a small metal cylinder con taining a roll of parchment and fastened .o the doorpost. "Every pious Jew, as often as he pases the Mez"7ah in leaving the house or enterinr it, touches the divine name with the finger of his right hand, puts it to his mouth, and kisses it. saying in He brew, 'The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for ever more'." Moses gave his people many a word of warning about forgetting Jehovah in times of prosperity. "And it shall be, when Jehovah thy God shall bring thee into the land which he sware unto thy fa thers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee, great and goodly cities, which thou buildest not. And houses full of good things, which thou fillest not, and cisterns hewn out, which thou hewedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not, and thou shalt eat and be full; "Then beware lest thou forget Jehovah, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage." In time of sorrow and poverty, people are apt to cry to the Lord for help, but when prosperity comes and they are living in lux ury, they forget from whence their blessings come. 1 They were warned not to wor ship strange gods and images, but to remember always what Jeho vah had done for them and always to be thankful to Him and worship Him. It Is too bad that we cannot quote more of the long lesson as signed to us today. There are beautiful passages in these chap ters which would be helpful to read or memorize, but space will not permit them to be used. The Memory Verse used with this les son we should commit to memory, "O give thanks unto Jehovah: for He is good." Also, "Every day will I bless Thee; and I will prft&e Thy name for ever and ever." Psalm 145:2. At The Churches CHRISTIAN SCIENCE Church rooms are located on the second floor of the Masonic Tem ple.
