Mrs. Sutton Is Named HDC President Mrs. Paul Sutton was elected . president of the Lake Junaluska Home Demonstration Club at a i meeting held Tuesday in the home | of Mrs. Carl Medford. Other offi-! cers elected were Mrs. John Mc Clure, vice president; Mrs. Wallace Torgerson. secretary and treasur er; Mrs. Jack Klopp, song leader; and Mrs. Will Medford, historian. Mrs. Carl Medford, outgoing president, presided and welcomed four new members, Mrs. J. W. Fowler, Mrs. Alfred Phillips, Mrs. Jack Klopp, and Mrs. Andy Moody. The demonstration, Planning for Christmas, was given by Miss Mary Cornwell, home agent. Luncheon was served by the hostess after which a Christmas party was enjoyed with an ex change of gifts. ? * * Mrs. David Vandever has re turned to her home in Anderson, S. C., after a visit with her sister, Mrs. M, H. Reeves. * * * Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Burnette, Sr. left Tuesday for West Palm Beach, Fla., where they will spend the winter months. Morning Star Club Meets With Mrs. Sharp The Morning Star Home Dem onstration club met Monday, at the home of Mrs. Gordon Sharp with Mrs. Dennis Israel as co hostess. tyrs. P. N. Higgins, Jr., president, was in charge of the business session. Book certificates were issued to Mrs. R. H. Worley, Mrs. V. E. Wilson. Jr., Mrs. How ard Cole, Mrs. Kenneth Crouse, Mrs. Tom King, Mrs. Loranzo Smathers, and Mrs. P. N. Higgins, Jr. The demonstration "Planning for Christmas" was given by,the home agent. Foods and Nutritions reports were given by Mrs. Ralph Gibson and Mrs. Gordon Sharp. Gift sug gestions were made by individual club members. A covered dish luncheon was served by the host esses. Gifts were exchanged by club sisters. ? * * Dellwood Club Has Christmas Party The Dellwood Home Demonstra tion Club held its annual Christ mas Party at the home of Mrs. Wiley Galloway Tuesday afternoon. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Vernon Wells, several items of business were presented by Mrs. W. D. Ketner. The demonstration "Planning for Christmas" was given by the home agent, after which members ex changed gifts and Christmas re freshments were served by the hostess. The dance will be held in the Waynesville Armory Saturday night, December 19, beginning at 9 o'clock. Music will be by Ted Lampley and his 7-piece band, The Cavaliers, of Hendersonville. Miss Edna Summeyrow is serving as general chairman for the event with the following committee chairmen: publicity, Miss Bernice Harrell; decorations, Mrs. Cecil Blanton and Mrs. Raymond Cald well; and tickets, Mrs. Hugh Potts and Miss Edith Summerrow. Advance tickets may be obtained from members of the sorority or at Charlie's Place and The Ladye Fayre Beauty Shop. Proceeds will be used by the sorority for charit-> able purposes. ? * * Mrs. J. R. McCracken Moving To Charlotte Mrs. J. R. McCracken is leaving this weekend for Charlotte where she has accepted a position as a senior nurse with the City Health Department. Mrs. McCracken has been a member of the staff of the Hay wood County Health Department since 1940 and served as supervis ing nurse during the years that the county was a part of a district health department. Her husband, the late Dr. McCracken died a few years ago. During her residence here, Mrs. McCracken has been an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Business and Profes sional Womens Club and other civ ic organizations. ? * * Pvt. Morrow To Play For Christmas Program Pvt. Joe Morrow will play two organ suites of Christmas music on a program of music and a pa geant to be presented in the Post Chapel at Red Stfipg. Arsenal, Alabarrnr, next Tuesday night. Two soloists will be featured and the title of the pageant is "Ye Shall Find a Babe". Pvt. Morrow has a degree in organ from the University of North Carolina. The 24-year-old soldier has served as organist at the Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Chapel Hill and at the First Baptist Church here. He was recently transferred to Alabama from Fort tJackson and is a chap lain's assistant. He is a member of the American Guild of Organ ists. ? * * DAR Will Meet With Mrs. Hyatt Friday The Dorcas Bell Love Chapter, Daughters of the American Revo lution will meet Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the home of Mrs. W. A. Hyatt at the Rqy Apartments on Haywood Street. Mrs. Joe Massie will be co-hostess. The program will be presented by Mrs. J. H. Kirkpatrick, Jr. and the magazine will be reviewed by Mrs. R. N. Barber. Members are requested to bring Christmas gifts for hospitalized veterans. * * * The Rev. and Mrs. Frank Leath erwood left Monday for an extend ed visit in Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, and Alabama. They will spend sometime in Decatur, Miss,, with their son, Edwin Leatherwood, who is a professor at East Central College, and will visit their daugh ter-in-law, Mrs. James Leather wood. and her son in McKinnney, Texas. They plan to return home about December 31. Cuba's First Lady MRS. MARTHA BATISTA, wife of the Cuban President, cmiles to a crowd that gathered to greet her as she arrived in New York for a brief visit. She carries a statuette of a saint. (International) Holiday House Tour Is Set For Thursday The third annual Holiday House Tour will be held Thursday, De cember 19, under the sponsorship of the Richland Garden Club. Four homes and the Waynesville Country. Club will be included on the Tour and will be open from 3 until 5 o'clock in the afternoon and from 7:30 until 9:30 o'clock in the evening. The homes to be visited are those of Mrs. Robert Turner, Mrs. Ralph Prevost, Mrs. Harry Whistnhunt, and Mrs. I, H. Smathers, Jr. Miss Lou Elva El ler will be hostess at The Waynes ville Country Club. Tickets may be purchased at all places and visitors may begin the tour from any point, Mrs. J. M. Long is general chairman for the event and all members of the club are assisting the hostesses in making unusual Christmas decorations. ? ? * W.C.C. Students Are Here For Holidays Haywood County students at Western Carolina College, Cullo whee arrived yesterday to spend the Christmas holidays with their families. Among them are Mary Osborne, Joan Ratcliffe, Harriet Gibson, Julia Ann Calhoun, Sylvia Camlin. Jack Campbell, Betty Ann Howell, Jack Finger, Sara Jane Davis, Dale Ratcliffe, Sara Jane Garrison. Luther Shaw, Frances Hoyle, and Dorothy Owen. ? ? * Servicemen Spend Weekend At Home Weekend visitors on Aliens Creek included several servicemen. They were Gerald Ferguson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ferguson, and Earl Mills, son of Mr. and Mrs. Millard Mills, both stationed at Camp Le Jeune; Louie Mills, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raleigh Mills, who is stationed at Norfolk; Dee Jor don, son of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Jor don, and Joe Mull, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Mull. ? * * Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Killian will leave tomorrow for Stark, Fla., where they will spend the holidays. Mrs. McCracken Is Honored At Luncheon Mrs. William Hannah and Miss Margaret Johnston entertained with a luncheon Monday at The Towne House honoring Mrs. J. R. McCracken, who is leaving soon to accept a position with the City Health Department of Charlotte. The table was centered with an arrangement of holly and appoint ments were in the Christmas motif. The guests included Mrs. Mc Cracken, Miss Mary Cornwell, Mrs. Clyde Ray, Jr., Mrs. L. K. Barber, Mrs. Robert Breese, Mrs. F. H. Marley, Mrs. Dan Watkins, and Mrs. R. L. Coin. ? * ? Doll, Costumes Create Interest On Main Street - Much interest is being shown ? especially by the small girls in the community?in the beautiful 27-inch doll, "Christy" on display in Massie's Department Store on Main Street. The doll, a project of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, comes com plete with 25 different costumes, ranging from pajamas to evening dresses ? all hand made by mem bers of the sorority. She will be given away at the Court House, De cember 19. Donations on the doll are being received by members of the soror ity and will go to a fund to pro vide a college scholarship for a deserving high school senior in the Waynesville township. ? ? ? Lakeside Club Elects Officers The Lakeside Home Demonstra tion Club held its annual Christmas meeting and election of officers Wednesday in the home of Mrs. Harry Whisenhunt. Mrs. Sam Lane and Mrs. E. L. Dudley were co hostesses. Officers elected were Miss Kate Phillips, president; Mrs. A. H. Hunt, "1st vice president; Mrs. Luther Shaw, 2nd vice president; Mrs. William Balentine, secretary treasurer; and Mrs. Rankin Fergu son, historian. Waynesville PTA Will Meet Tuesday A Christmas program will be presented at a meeting of the East Waynesville Parent Teacher Asso ciation Tuesday, December 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. The Christmas Story in flannel graph will be shown by Mrs. Phil lip Chase and Christmas music will be directed by Miss Kathleen Nash. Students will participate in sing ing carols with Margaret Wilson, second grader as soloist.
