All but two of the candles were j made by. the pupils themselves, i who learned the art of candle mak ing at school and then went home ; to practice their skill. Mr. and Mrs. Virgil C. Singletor of Canton, a daughter. December 8 Lt. Hooper Alexander, III, whc wrote here several weeks ago, ask ing that Haywood countians senc his men some candles. Lt. Alexander explained thai their electric generator had failec and that they had had little 01 no lights in their dugouts for twc weeks. The Army provided some candles, but there were not enough to go around to all the troops, the lieutenant explained. Many of the candles made by the school children were three or foui inches in diameter?the type thai will burn for six to eight hours. Mrs. Howell said that her pu pils were making the candles foi Christmas, but decided to senc them to Americans in Korea wher they read of the G.I.'s needs in i recent Mountaineer article. Pressley, 71 at his home in Gastonia last week Mr. Pressley was a native of Haywood County and had resided in Gastonia lor the past 35 years, His first wife, the former Miss Laura Cunningham, died in 1933, He is survived by his second wife, Mrs. Mamie Smathers Leather wood Pressley; three daughters, Mrs. R. W. Frye of Spindale, Mrs. Way Cabe, and Mrs. Charles T. Stowe; a son, Frank Pressley, ail of Gastonia; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
