Patrol headquarters said today the sturdy nylon belts would be in stalled in every one of the 531-car fleet. Studies made in 323 auto acci dents last year showed 44 per cent of those injured were Hung through doors that popped open on impact. , I "This indicates," said patrol I commander James R. Smith, "that . one of the principle causes of auto injuries comes from being thrown i ] completely clear of the car in a 1 smashup. We are I encouraging our men to make it a J habit to use the belts regularly I while they are at work. And we I hope eventually that all Tar Heel I drivers will consider them for their ' I own cars and trucks." The belts* which cost the patrol i| $3.90 each, are bolted to the car's J| frame.
