Hendersonville Here Friday Night Fer Major Blue Ridge Cage Clash;

?
We have been wondering today if the Mountaineers have ever
before in history played so many basketball games in one season
in which the final outcome was in doubt right down to the last sec
ond of the contest?
Three of their last four games have been of the "photo finish"
variety ? against Canton. Bethel, and Clyde.
All In all. Waynesvillf has playtd three games in which the
winning margin was only one point and have played two more in
which the final edge was only two points.
So, if it's thrillers you like, don't miss any of the Mountaineers'
hardwood hassles. The big 'un coming up here tomorrow night
against Hendersonviile should offer more of the same excitement.
* The attendance at the Canlon-Waynesville game here broke all
records set last year, but the Bethel game came along a week later
and established another record.
The officiating at the Clyde-Waynesville game Tuesday night
was the poorest we've seen in Western North Carolina, but it was
not one sided ? both teams suffered during the rough and tumble
action.
For a time the contest strongly resembled a football game and
looked for a while as if the proceedings might get out of hand.
However. Waynesville's defeat at Clyde can't be blamed on the
officials. The Mountaineers just weren't hitting enough and were
outrebounded too often.
Waynesville's new cheerleaders make a very striking appear
ance on the hardwood. Glad to have them on hand.
And speaking of cheerleaders, Clyde's corps are decked out in
maroon and gold jeans.
One of these days they're going to play a basketball game in
the Waynesville gym without having to stop to mop up a soft drink
that somebody spilled on the playing floor.

Canton Will
Play Host
To. Brevard
Fo' the third straight Friday
night Waynesvllle will present a
top WNC cage attraction when the
always rugged Hendersonville
Bearcats come to town for an im
portant Blue Ridge Conference
clash.
In the only other game sched
uled in the county this weekend.
Canton wil play host to Brevard.
Games away will find Bethel at
Reynolds tonight and Clyde at
Fletcher and Fines Creek at
Edneyville Friday night. Crabtree
Iron Duff is slated to be idle.
Despite their upset loss to Clyde
Tuesday night, the Mountaineers
still have a perfect mark in the
Blue Ridge and will be out to beat
the third of three traditional con
ference opponents ? Henderson
ville ? after having gotten safely
_by Canton and Bethel in two close
games.
Against Clyde Tuesday night,
Waynesvllle put on a desperate
fourth-quarter rally and cut the
Cardinals' lead from nine to two
points, but Old Father Time halted
the Gold and Black two points
short of the mark.
Clyde played steady ball
throughout, while the Mountain
eers suffered two "cold spells"
during the contest.
Hendersonville has already split
games with two Haywood oppon
ents ? losing to Canton and
downing Bethel in two games last
week. Early in the season the
| Bearcats dropped two tilts to Lee
Edwards and nosed out Owen High
in their last start Tuesday night.
Canton will be heavily favored
at home Friday night to repeat
their earlier victory over Brevard
on the Transylvania hardwood
The Blue Devils, apparently out of
the Blue Ridge race again this
year, also have dropped two games
to Waynesvllle. "
Clyde's classy Cardinals, over
joyed by their victory over Way
l nesville at home Tuesday night,
will be out for victory No. 8 of
I the season at Fletcher. The Ma
roon and Gold cagers have won
six out of their last seven games?
losing only to Cantoc recently.
Edneyvilie, always a powerful
contender, proved too talented for
Bethel on the Pigeon planks Tues
day, but the young Blue Demons
will hjive an excellent chance to |
rack up another triumph tonight .
against Reynolds. The Buncombe
basketeers already have dropped
games to both Canton and Way
nesville.
Fines Creek, idle Tuesday, faces

Clyde Hands Mountaineer Cagers
First Loss_As Rally Falls Short
By BOB CONWAY
The law of averages caught up
with Waynesville Tuesday night at
Clyde and the Mountaineers were
knocked out of the undefeated
class as a fourth-period rally fell
short by two points. 43-41.
The Waynesville girls also found
the going rough in Cardinals
country, but put on the pressure
to win, 63-57.
Five otner times thiR season, the
Mountaineers have stared defeat
squarely in the face?against Mur
phy, Clyde (here), Fines Creek.
Canton, and Bethel, but alwavs
have managed before to emerge on
'.he fat end of the store.
However. Clyde, who lost by
only one point on the WTHS floor
Before Christmas after leading
most of the way, was not to he
lenied Tuesday night and took ad
vantage of Mountaineer miscues to
wrap up its first major county vic
tory this year.
Summing ep the game in a few
words, it was the steady playing of
Clyde versus the irregular offen
sive of Waynesville that spelled
the difference.
In the second quarter. Clyde
scored nine straight points, while
Waynesville went scoreless and
again at the end of the third char
ter and start of the fourth the
Cardinals sank four field goals in
succession while the Mountaineers
failed to find the range.
In the falal second quarter.
Waynesville went six and a half
minutes without a point until Don
Jordan dumped in two layups t;>
cut Clyde's halftime margin to only
four points.
Waynesville led. 16-15. at the end
of the first quarter, but Howard
Shook's pivot shot at the start of
the second period put the host
team ahead until the third quarter
The Gold and Black dribblers re
gained the lead twice in the third
| quarter, but Jim Green's long shot
[ put Clyde back on top at 30-23.
'and they never were headed again
Trailing by nine points midway
in the fourth quarter, the Moun
taineers started a last-ditch rally,
sparked by Jordan, who hit three
quick baskets, and Tom Sparks who
converted two free throws.
This sudden surge might have
overtaken the Cardinals had it not
been for the team's smallest mem
ber, Danny Caldwell, who caged
two fouls and then sneaked through
for a layup that provided the win
ning margin.
Waynesville hit on 11 out of 18
free throw attempts, while Clyde
cashed in 13 out of 21 tries.
Jordan was again high scorer
for the Mountaineers with 20
points, while Carroll Hooper was
second highest with 10, exhibiting
some nice shots under the basket.
Shook and Caldwell each got a
down for Clyde.
In the girls' game, the Waynes
vllle Mountalnettes were continu
ally pressed by the Clyde girls, al
though the local lassies won, 71-48,
in the first game here.
Waynesville, however, led at the
end of the first quarter, 16-13; at
the half. 36-29. and at the end of
the third quarter. 50-47.
Agnes Robcrson again showed
the way for the Mountainettes with
28 points, while Tulan Carver net
ted another 20.

Top Clyde, 52-36
The Waynesville Jayvee basket
ball team had considerably better
luck against Clyde Tuesday after
noon than the varsity did Tuesday
night and came up with a 52-36
victory over the Cardinal fledg
lings.
WTIIS also won over Clyde in
an earlier meeting of the two "B"
teams.
Jenkins paced the Little Moun
taineers with a sizzling 27 points,
while Seay was high for the Clyde
team with 16.
Waynesvilie was ahead at the
half. 27-19.
