The Mountaineers staged an iron man act in beating the Henderson ville quintet, going all the way with the starting five of Hooper. Davis, Sparks, Ballance. and Jor dan. Coach Bob Tate of the Bear cats used eight players in a vain effort to halt the WTHS offense, which never let up during the con test. Only little Yogi Poteet and Don Heilig were able to keep up with the hustling Waynesville five. At the end of the first quarter, Hendersonville led by two points at 11-9. The score was tied several times during the second quarter until Waynesville caged six foul shots and one field goal to go out in front at the half, 23-17. The Gold and Black stayed ahead throughout the third quarter, but a jump shot by Poteet put the Bear cats back in command, 38-37, as the fourth period opened. The game see-sawed back and fourth until midway in the final quarter when Tony Davis caged two quick fielders for the Mountaineers and followed up with a third a short time later. Ballance and Sparks also added goals and Jordan converted two free throws and Carroll Hooper one. Then, with a seven-point lead? their biggest of the game ? the highlanders slowed down the game and went into a deep freeze to in sure their first cage victory over Hendersonvtlle in several years.
