I The Church Reaches Out BY PREACHING IN OTHER CITIES THAN JERUSALEM, THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST SPREAD Scripture?Acta S-k-i9. By NEWMAN CAMPBELL PERSECUTION in Jerusalem caused the disciples of Christ's Gospel to scatter. Philip went to Samaria to preach, and "the peo ple with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the mirstcles which he did. . . . And there was great jby in that city." , In Samaria there was a man named Simon who practiced sor cery and had the people bewitch- [ i ed. He was highly regarded, the people thinking that he was a "grfat power of God." He was very conceited, thinking that he really was "some great one." Hearing Philip pre?ch the Gos pel of Christ an<] making many converts?men and women?and seekig them baptized, Simon be lieved also and was baptized. He stayed with Philip, wondering much at beholding the miracles Philip performed. When word reached the church in Jerusalem of Philip's success in Samaria, Peter and John were to the Lord for him. Then Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, | preaching in many towns of Sa maria as they went. The angel of the Lord told Philip to go south on the way that led from Jerusalem to Gaza, an ancient city, famous in the story of Samson, and situated on the southernmost end of Pales tine. Philip started immediately and saw "a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of Ethiopia, who had the charge of all her treas ure." The Ethiopian had been to Jerusalem to worship, and as he sat in his chariot he was reading the Book of Isaiah, Philip noticed. Philip asked him if he under stood what he read, and he said he could not without someone to guide him. So Philip Joined the eunuch in the chariot, arid as they went on their way he explained the text of the Scripture to him. telling him that the prophecy in Isaiah was of the coming of Jesus. Tell-} MEMORY VERSE "By this shall all men know that ye are My 4iaciplct, if ye have love one to another."?John 13:S5. sent there, and when they found that the new converts were bap tized but had not received the Holy Ghost, they knelt in prayer, then laid their hands on the new ly made believers, and they too received the power of the Holy Spirit. Simon, looking on in wonder, yearned to be like the apostles and be able to bring the Holy Ghost to those who believed by the laying on of hands. As was natural to a man of his nature, he thought he could buy this great gift, and so he offered money to obtain it. Peter rebuked Simon severely, telling him that his heart was not right in the sight of God, be cause he had offered money to buy that which was not to be purchased with lucre. It was a free gift from the Father. Peter told Simon to pray for forgiveness of his sin. and Simon answered by asking Peter to pray in( this devout man of the (foepel of Jesus Christ, Philip convinced him. Coming to a pool of water the eunuch asked if he might be bap tized there. Philip said: "If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest," and the eunuch answered, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the son ot God." So he was baptised and went on his way rejoicing. Philip also went his way, north to Caesarea, preaching the gos pel as he went. He had, as we all should have, but many modern Christians do not, a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. Shakespeare said: "There Is some soul of goodness in things evil, would we observantly distil it out." Religious persecution is a terrible evil, but our lesson points out that in the scattering of the apostles because of perse cution, Christianity was carried to many lands. Here there is sanctuary, freedom, at least temporarily, from the worries of the outer world. In every great life, there have been times of reflection and meditation. There have been moments of solitude to renew a flagging spirit with the infinite power of God, to find an inner peace which comes from another world. In every life, there are times when sanctuary is needed. There are moments when the quiet witness of the Holy House is more eloquent than all the words in the world. Often a step into the shadowed quiet of a church brings a resurgence of faith and courage that sets life on a new and greater course. This is the miracle of sanctuary?a miracle that can happen TO YOU! *' THE CHURCH FOR ALL . ALL FOR THE CHURCH | The Church ie the greatest factor on earth lor the building oi character and good citisenship. f It ie a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a f strong Church, neither democracy nor civilisation can survive. There are four sound reasons why ** every person should attend services regularly and support the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the I sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral ?
