Boosters Club Carrying On Number Of Civic Projects TU,> n-?* r"1 mr uurinuuu owraicis V.IUU is perhaps the oldest non-affili ated civic group in the state. Their history dates back to 1927, and during that time has led the way for many of the community projects in Hazelwood. In recent years the Liens Club, and Boost eretles?wive* of the Boosters? have taken over some of the com munity responsibilities. Nevertheless, the Boosters, are still carrying on their share of the work in Hazelwood. and through them, the Finer Caro lina program community building has been generated to the pres ent high level. Taking a pointer from the Finer Carolina program?or visa versa?the clgb's motto is: "Help ing Make Hazelwood the Finest Town In The Carolinas." The motto is not just nice sounding words for a sign on the clubroom wall, but the members live and work at the program ioi-^2 months in the year. in the middle thirties the r^HRrs became concerned about the lack of a community band, and started a movement which resulted in the organization of the present state-wide rated YVTHS band. The club also spon sored the Fourth of July program ' rides each year, with a major part of the proceeds going to the band. When Little League baseball teams became a means of pro viding recreation in the summer for hundreds of boys, the Club sponsored the project, paying the director, and later helped build the park for the teams to play. Later the club added seats for t pectators, a shower, and rest room for players. The club has been sponsor of the Boy Scouts and Brownie troop, and given generously to other .such causes in the past. Sensing the need for the com munity house, the Club by agree ment let some other organiza tions take over some sponsor ship of Scouts, as the Boosters purchased a lot at the corner of Main and Virginia Avenue for the erection of a Club House, or community center. The first steps towards the Community Center was stemmed by the keen interest generated by the Club's motto, and being a sponsor of the Finer Carolina movement, the project has started. Just when it will be finished has not been determined, and little docs that matter, because the Club is determined to see tHat the project is finished in "grand style" as early as pos sible, and practical, for the good of the community. ~ The Boosters Club is a Club that lives up to its name and motto. The projected Hazelwood Bap tist Church sanctuary and educa tional building will cost about SI 50,0(?0. A new Pastorium was recently purchased and renovated by the congregation of the Hazelwood Baptist Church. Wig gins. The group was organized only tlus year. Mr. Wiggins says, and already has 16 to 18 young people attending regularly. Another source of pride to the church is the fact that it has no debts and no obligations. Mem bers are without tanfare laying aside money for" a new building, which they feel is sadly needed. Even without an organized cam paign. the fund now totals St3(H). and they are paying $50 regular ly every month into the Building and Loan. '"The church was established *8 a mission about 19 years ago." Mr. Wiggins explains, "and you ?night say we inherited this build ing from the Presbyterians when they built their new one. Now we've outgrown it too." Church membership is 90 in eluding 11 persons received this year. Sunday School member ship is 102, and WSCS. 16 The pulpit is supplied by Mr. Wiggins, a retired minister who lives at Lake Junaluska.
